Introduction

21st Century Literature from the Philippines and the World Module
aims to engage students in appreciation and critical study of 21st
Century Literature from the Philippines and the World, encompassing
their various dimensions, genres, elements, structures, contexts, and
traditions.

This module allows the learners to embark on a journey from


Philippine regions to the different parts of the world through various
literary encounters.

Here, the learners will be accompanied by Lito and Letty, the ship
captains of Balangay ( an old name of a Philippine boat). Lito is a
Filipino Ship Captain who is in-charge of the local destinations. And
Letty is a Lady Ship Captain from other country. She is in-charge of the
tour abroad. Lito and Letty assist each other in every module visit.

Stories are all around us. Whether in reading books, watching TV


shows and movies, or listening to conversations, you encounter real life
experiences of different people. They may not only entertain you, they may
even teach you a lesson or two.

Writers use anecdotes to impart a lesson in an entertaining way. They


may narrate a past personal experience, or relate an experience of another
person related to the topic discussed.

An anecdote is a literary genre that tells a story about an incident in a


person’s life. Although it is often amusing and humorous, an anecdote is
different from a joke because it does not just aim to make people laugh, but
to reveal a deeper truth about a person, or to spark a realization about an
idea.

In this module, you will learn about anecdotes as a tool to effectively


communicate a lesson or idea. Specifically, you will be reading about an
anecdote of Dr. Jose P. Rizal, our national hero. He recalls about a night,
while looking at two moths circling the light of a lamp as his mother tells him
a story. Read on and learn about what realization and lesson Dr. Jose Rizal
learned through the story of the moth and the lamp.

DIRECTIONS:

see attachment on pages 25-26.
2. Pick out some lines (at least three) wherein the speakers look back at
some of their experiences like the examples below:
 “Kasi dati, nabubully ako sa school. Ang pumasok lang sa isip ko
nun, gumanti. Siya (KB) yung tututong sa ‘kin na makipagresbakan,
and akala ko nun ano e, ‘makikipagbugbugan’ kami e, sapakan.
Tinuruan ako ni KB kung paano maging Salbabida rin sa iba.”
 Actually, hindi lang ako yung nakatagpo, kasama ko nun si KB,
kaming dalawa. Nakita namin si Kesz natutulog sa harapan ng
convenient store. Nagkaro’n ng compassion si KB na tulungan si
Kesz. Kasi ano eh, sinisipa-sipa siya nung mga dumadaan, tapos
puro sugat pa yung ulo niya, tapos, wala siyang damit.”

Do you know that an anecdote is an amusing


short story about a real person or event that intends
to impart a life lesson? Keep these in mind.

People are fond of sharing humorous experiences in life to their


family members and friends. As anecdotes pop up, all day, every day.
An anecdote is a short amusing or interesting story about a real
incident or person.
Anecdotes cover a wide variety of stories and tales, especially
since they can be about basically any subject under the sun. It is a short
story about a real person or event, usually serving to make the listeners
laugh or ponder over a topic. Generally, the anecdote will relate to the
subject matter that the group of people is discussing.
For example, if a group of learners are discussing pets, and one
learner tells a story about how his cat comes downstairs at a certain time
every night, then that learner has just shared an anecdote. Let's look at the
anecdote below, a conversation of former Pres. Manuel L. Quezon and his
daughter.

As Heads of the Family


Daughter Nini Quezon Avanceña recalled how she hates social
function during their time in Malacañang and one day her father asked her
to attend a social function with him.
“You know the President’s invitation is a command”, he told his
daughter who was avoiding the question.
“Are you inviting me as the President of the Philippines or as my
father?”, she asked him jokingly.
Immediately, President’s Quezon’s eyes twinkled as he answered;
“Since I know you hate these social functions, I am inviting you as a father,
so you can refuse it if you want to.” – Araceli T. Salazar.

Whenever an anecdote is introduced, either in real life or fiction, it


provides background information. An author might write a scene where
one of the characters tells the other a bit of their back story, usually to
create depth and intrigue. Let's explore some of the purposes
behind anecdotes.

Purposes of Anecdotes
 To Bring Cheer
Sometimes telling a story just makes people laugh or brightens the
mood. Here is an example of an anecdote meant to look back on happy
memories:
• Before Christmas morning breakfast, parents tell their children
about their very first Christmas together.
 To Reminisce
In most anecdotes, people are talking about their past. They are
looking back on moments in their lives and sharing the joy of that time
with others. Here is an example of an anecdote with a hint of
reminiscence:
• A mother tells her son a story about a family vacation when she was
growing up.
 To Caution
Sometimes, just laying out rules for individuals is not effective. They
need to hear frightening stories of dangers that can be avoided by
following regulations. Here are some examples of cautionary anecdotes:
• Before beginning a lecture on why staying out late is inappropriate, a
father tells his daughter about a scary incident he had one time
when he stayed out too late.
• Before giving a presentation on the dangers of drug abuse, the
speaker tells the audience how he himself used to abuse drugs and
explains the negative effects it brought about in his life.
 To Persuade or Inspire
Sometimes, people just want others to know they've faced similar
struggles and they're there to help. They can also be conveying the
message that, with a little bit of hard work, brighter futures are ahead.
Here is an example of an inspirational anecdote:
• Before beginning a tutoring session, the tutor tells the student how
he used to struggle with the subject matter in the past and how he
managed to grow past these difficulties (LoveToKnow Corp., 2019).

Anecdotes like other literary genres are interpreted in many ways


such with the use of multimedia.

Multimedia is the field concerned with the computer-controlled


integration of text, graphics, drawings, still and moving images (video),
animation, audio, and any other media where every type of information can
be represented stored, transmitted and processed digitally (Dave, 2001).

Keeping Track

An anecdote is a brief, revealing account of an individual person or an


incident. Occasionally humorous, anecdotes differ from jokes because their
primary purpose is not to simply provoke laughter but to reveal a truth more
general than the brief tale itself, such as to characterize a person by
delineating a specific quirk or trait, to communicate an abstract idea about
a person, place, or thing through the concrete details of a short narrative.
An anecdote is "a story with a point (Cuddon, J.A., 1992 & Epstein, L.,
1989).

Do you fully understand an anecdote and its


purposes? Try to recall some anecdotes you read or
listened to.
Now that you have understood an anecdote, can
you now determine the themes and purposes of
anecdotes you read or listened to? Challenge yourself
more with the next activity.

“On the Moth and the Lamp”


My mother was
teaching me to read in a
Spanish reader called "The
Children's Friend" (El
Amigo de los Niños). This
was quite a rare book and
an old copy. It had lost its
cover and my sister had
cleverly made a new one.
She had fastened a sheet
of thick blue paper over the back and then covered it with a piece of cloth.
This night my mother became impatient with hearing me read so
poorly. I did not understand Spanish and so I could not read with
expression. She took the book from me. First, she scolded me for drawing
funny pictures on its pages. Then, she told me to listen and she began to
read. When her sight was good, she read very well. She could recite well,
and she understood verse-making, too. Many times during Christmas
vacations, my mother corrected my poetical compositions, and she always
made valuable criticisms.
I listened to her, full of childish enthusiasm. I marvelled at the nice-
sounding phrases which she read from those same pages. The phrases
she read so easily stopped me at every breath. Perhaps I grew tired of
listening to sounds that had no meaning for me. Perhaps I lacked self-
control. Anyway, I paid little attention to the reading. I was watching the
cheerful flame. About it, some little moths were circling in playful flights. By
chance, too, I yawned. My mother soon noticed that I was not interested.
She stopped reading. Then she said to me: "I am going to read you a very
pretty story. Now pay attention."

On hearing the word 'story', I at once opened my eyes wide. The


word 'story' promised something new and wonderful. I watched my mother
while she turned the leaves of the book, as if she were looking for
something. Then I settled down to listen. I was full of curiosity and
wonder. I had never even dreamed that there were stories in the old book
which I read without understanding. My mother began to read me the fable
of the young moth and the old one. She translated it into Tagalog a little at
a time.
My attention increased from the first sentence. I looked toward the
light and fixed my gaze on the moths which were circling around it. The
story could not have been better timed. My mother repeated the warning
of the old moth. She dwelt upon it and directed it to me. I heard her, but it
is a curious thing that the light seemed to me each time more beautiful, the
flame more attractive. I really envied the fortune of the insects. They
frolicked so joyously in its enchanting splendor that the ones which had
fallen and been drowned in the oil did not cause me any dread.
My mother kept on reading and I listened breathlessly. The fate
of the two insects interested me greatly. The flame rolled its golden tongue
to one side and a moth which this movement had singed fell into the oil,
fluttered for a time and then became quiet. That became for me a great
event. A curious change came over me which I have always noticed in
myself whenever anything has stirred my feelings. The flame and the moth
seemed to go further away and my mother's words sounded strange and
uncanny. I did not notice when she ended the fable. All my attention was
fixed on the face of the insect. I watched it with my whole soul... It had
died a martyr to its illusions.
As she put me to bed, my mother said: "See that you do not
behave like the young moth. Don't be disobedient, or you may get burnt as
it did." I do not know whether I answered or not... The story revealed to me
things until then unknown. Moths no longer were, for me, insignificant
insects. Moths talked; they know how to warn. They advised just like my
mother. The light seemed to me more beautiful. It had grown more dazzling
and more attractive. I knew why the moths circled the flame.

Efren: Ako ay si Efren Peñaflorida at sila Kesz at KB ako ay naniniwalang lahat


ng tao ay pwedeng maging salbabida kase ang taong sumalba sakin,
yung taong tumulong sakin ay si KB.

KB: Dahil sa Cavite City maraming mga bata nasasadlak sila sa mga gang.
Marami silang nabibiktima at kinakatandaan na nila yun so naging
posisyon ko na tulungan yung mga bata, nagkakaroon ng mga
problema sa pag aaral. Doon ko nakilala si Efren at nakita ko na malaki
ang binubunong problema dahil ayaw na nya mag aral.

Efren: Kasi dati binubully ako sa school, ang pumasok sa isip ko ay gumanti.
Siya yung tutulong sakin na makipagresbakan. Ang akala ko nun ano eh
makikipagbugbugan kami eh, sapakan pero sabi nya ibang paraan yung
gagawin nya. Tinuran ako ni KB na kung paano maging salbabida rin sa
iba, marami na sakin tumatawag na kuya Efren, isa na nga dun si Kesz.

Kesz: Nakatira po ako sa isang dumpsite sa Cavite City po. Bale po ang
ginagawa ko ay nangangalahig po ako ng basura po at namalimos din
po ako pera sa palengke po.

Efren: Actually di lang ako nakatagpo, kasama ko nun si KB, kaming dalawa.
Nakita namin si Kesz na natutulog sa harapan ng convenient store.
Nagkaroon ako ng compassion, si KB na tulungan si Kesz. Kasi ano eh,
sinisipa-sipa siya nung mga dumadaan, tapos puro sugat pa yung ulo
nya tapos wala syang damit. Ilan taon ka nun Kesz?

Kesz: Four... Four years old po mga gnun po.

EP: Si KB yung nagbigay ng ano, nagbigay ng unang tulong sa kanya.

Efren: Ang process nung Kariton Klasrum ano, dinadala namin yung kariton
dun sa community tapos sa tulong din ng mga grupo nila Kesz, kasi si
Kesz meron na siyang sariling grupo eh. Actually nag volunteer siya
samin, when he was six years old, bata pa siya nun.

KB: Sabi nya nga nun, "Magaling naman po ako mag wash ng hands tsaka
magbrush ng teeth”. Sabi ko Efren bakit di natin kunin tong Hygiene

yung mga children kasi kilala nila si Kesz kasi he was one of them.

EP: Ahh nung una kaming nagtulak ng kariton, talagang ano, maraming
negative reactions yung mga narereceive namin. Talagang minumura
kami sa kalye, tapos pinagtatawanan kami. Binabato kami, so hindi

maganda yung pagtanggap samin. Yung mga tambay binabato kami


minumura kami. So nahihiya na tuloy yung mga volunteers namin na
magtulak ng kariton kasi pinagtatawanan kami. Iyong eksatong sinabi
nya samin, yung isang bagay na ginagawa nyo, mali ba yan?

KB: Hindi dapat kinakahiya ang isang bagay na tama.

Efren: Sabi nga ni KB ah, pag nagtutulak kayo ng kariton wag kayong yuyuko
ahhh kasi kung kinakahiya nyo yan baka mabangga kayo pag nakayuko
kayo. Tapos nung pumasok itong CNN Hero. Turn around talaga yung
reaction, maraming nasiyahan, maraming nag approve. Pati yung mga
tambay nag-iba na yung perspective nila, nagpapicture na sila. Sabi
naman samin ni KB nun "Oh yan na ah kilala na yung mga ginagawa
nyo sikat na kayo, marami ng kumikilala sa inyo na wag naman kayong
magtutulak ng kariton na nakataas ang noo. Just continue kung ano
yung ginagawa mong mabuti". Dun kami mas lalong na inspire, sa mga
advises samin ni KB.

KB: Pagtulong hindi naman costly eh, lalo na pag simpleng pag angat lang
kailangan ng mga tao. May mga bagay na pwede kang itulong sa kanila
na di ka naman kailangan gumastos ng malaki. If there is a need, you
have to do something. So whenever you see them, kumilos na.

Efren: So eight years old nagsolo na si Kesz. Meron na siyang sariling


organization.

Kesz: Ang ginagawa po namin ay nagtuturo kami sa mga bata po sa


mahihirap na communities po.

Efren: Kahit bata sila, meron silang magagawa, kasi ganun din yung
pinaramdam samin ni KB nun na do not let anyone look down on
because you are young.
