 The Story of a Mission
In 1979 Mario Cappello had a life-transforming spiritual experience with Youth With a Mission in
Lausanne, Switzerland, where he clearly realized that God was leading him to establish an international School
of Mission to train Catholics into effective evangelizers. The first School of Evangelization was held in Malta in
January 1985, and from this, The Institute for World Evangelization - ICPE Mission, was founded by Mario and
his wife Anna.
In 1986 the Mission's vision was presented to The Holy Father, Pope John Paul II, during a private din-
ner with the ICPE Mission‟s founders Mario and Anna Cappello at his summer residence in Castel Gandolfo.
He affirmed the ICPE Mission and bestowed his personal support and encouragement upon it. The Cappellos
departed, secure in continuing the mission that Christ had placed on their hearts. A second School of Missions
was held in Rome that year, from which 12 participants became committed lay missionaries. The ICPE Mission
became an international Catholic community of lay people through these original 12 members. They came
from Mexico, South Korea, the United States, Holland, Malta, Germany, and New Zealand, and resided as a
community in Malta. The ICPE Mission was enriched through this diversity of cultures and backgrounds, and
gradually spread across all continents. In 2002 the Holy See conferred Pontifical Recognition on the Institute
for World Evangelization– ICPE Mission as an International Association of Pontifical Right.
The ICPE Mission currently coordinates its worldwide activity from several regional centers located over
different continents, namely, Germany, New Zealand, Ghana, the Philippines, Rome, India, Singapore, South
Korea, The United States, and Malta. The 25th Anniversary of the Mission was celebrated in 2010.

Structure of the ICPE Mission

Membership: Members of the ICPE Mission can come from any category of the faithful, that is: lay people -
married or single, religious - male and female, and diocesan priests. They should be at least twenty-one years
of age and should have both professional qualifications and two years of work experience. On completion of a
School of Mission and Community Experience, the member goes through a two-year formation program. The
qualities that characterize potential ICPE Missionaries include a living, personal relationship with God, passion
and zeal for Christ and His mission, adaptability, flexibility, availability, and a readiness to embrace new cul-
tures and differences in others.
Leadership: The leadership of the ICPE Mission consists of the Executive Council and the ICPE community
leaders in different countries. Together, these two leadership bodies are responsible for the nurturing of the
vision and the life of the Association. Decision-making in the ICPE Mission is generally through the consensus
of the body after a consultation process with those whom the decision will ultimately affect.
Full-time, Residential Missionaries: At the heart of the ICPE Mission is the full-time lay missionary voca-
tion. This lifestyle is characterized by individuals and families who very often leave their home country to live
together in households, sharing community life and devoting themselves to the Church‟s evangelizing mission,
in submission to the local Ordinary.
ICPE Spiritual Family: Throughout the years, the ICPE Mission established residential communities and
households. More recently, the ICPE family extended itself to include "Companions" and "Friends" who are liv-
ing the charism of the ICPE Mission in the heart of society.
 Companions: ICPE Companions are members of the ICPE Mission whose personal vocation or circumstances
places them at the heart of society, outside an ICPE residential community. These members are engaged in secular
employment, integrated in their local parishes and closely connected to an ICPE residential community. Compan-
ions live and further the ICPE charism and spirit in society wherever they live.
 Friends: ICPE Friends are members at heart, informally linked to the Mission. These friends of the ICPE Mission
participate in the grace of the Mission and endeavor to live according to the spirit which characterizes it, united in
prayer, fraternal love, and common service to the Church with ICPE community members and other Friends of
the Mission.

ICPE Mission Spirituality
The heart of the ICPE Mission spirituality is the baptismal covenant of love with
God: “For the love of God has been poured into our hearts by the Holy Spirit which has been
given us” (Rom 5:5). The members of the ICPE Mission seek to live this call to holi-
ness and mission in an all-encompassing way and with docility to be led by the Holy
Spirit. Through a life of daily prayer, participation in the Sacraments, the study of
Scriptures, formation and service, they open their lives to the transforming action of
the Holy Spirit as God draws them into intimate self -disclosure. This internal revo-
lution of Love precipitates in them a response of worship to the Lord so that their
life is lived out in submission to God. It is also this dynamism of Love that propels
them to reach out to others in the world.

“St. Andrew School of
Evangelization”. This mission
school is made up of several
different modules taking either

Situated at the early 20th-century
St. Gerard‟s Monastery, ICPE New
Zealand is perched above the
sparkling harbor of Wellington,

Redemptorist Order, the monastery
and church have been a hub of
evangelistic activity since its
founding. On invitation from the
NZ Bishop‟s Conference, the first
School of Mission (SOM), took
place in 1988/89. Seven years later,
the ICPE Mission Center was
officially opened at St. Gerard‟s by

ICPE Mission NZ ministries are the
following:
 Prison Ministry- This 16 year-old
ministry is held weekly through
ICPE missionaries and local
volunteers visiting a Wellington
prison. They host Bible sharing,
teachings about the faith, and
prayer meetings. There is an
annual, year-end dinner at St.
Gerard‟s for volunteers in
thanksgiving for their time and
effort and as an opportunity for
community building.
 Women‟s and Men‟s Ministry-
ICPE Mission NZ formed both
ministries, and there are cell
groups for each. They are also
running a “Fathers‟ and Mothers‟
Prayer” group at St. Gerard‟s, who
meet to pray for their children and
their families.

Parish Missions- Aside from
SOM outreaches, ICPE runs
various parish missions around
the country. After a 2009 mission
in Auckland, 14 participants flew
to Wellington for a follow-up
weekend to grow deeper with
Christ at St. Gerard‟s
Monastery. Wimpie bears witness
that, “when we reach out to
people, when they are truly open
to the Lord, it is amazing!” ICPE
Community members also
periodically travel to assist other
mission centers in running
outreaches and retreats. These
events build SOM familiarity, from
which NZ receives many
attendees.
 St. Gerard‟s Church is open to the
public every Sunday, for a local
priest comes to celebrate Mass.
ICPE Mission NZ runs “Faith
Fuel” after Mass for formation,
fellowship, and food.
The ICPE Mission has a wonderful
relationship with the Archdiocese of
Wellington. They conduct outreaches,
youth gatherings, and charismatic
worship nights. They also
collaborated with youth leaders in the
Archdiocese to prepare groups
attending WYD Sydney through
teachings, retreats and events.

ICPE Mission Ghana is situated in
the Sub-Saharan West African town
of Kumasi, Ghana. Dominic Osei-

youth vacation camps have been
held for the past seven years.
The focus is on directing youth
towards a relationship with God,
addressing pressing challenges,

and helping the youth in their
career development.
 Parish Outreach- ICPE travels to

 Breast Cancer Awareness
Campaign- The Ghana Breast
Cancer Alliance (GBCA) is a
unique coalition of leading local
and international experts and
institutions seeking to address the
major breast health needs in
Ghana and sub-Saharan Africa.
 Mission: Possible- Voluntary
teachers and other professionals
are sent to rural communities to
teach in schools or organize free
vacation classes for pupils and
educate the community on issues
ranging from HIV/AIDS and
human trafficking to diverse social
interest issues.
 Mini Clinic– HopeXchange Ghana
and volunteer partners, nurses,
and medical students pair with
local doctors to conduct mini
clinics in needy communities.

place outdoors or in nearby
parishes. Volunteers assist the
local people and especially pre-

conducting free health education
and medical screening through
blood work tests and various
clinical functions. They make

those who need further attention
to nearby hospitals.
 Long Distance Adoption-
through this initiative, foreigners
“adopt” a child. They pay
insurance, school fees, and
support for the upkeep of a
Ghanaian child living in abject
poverty. Children have been
successfully adopted and are
happily attending school.
ICPE Mission Ghana would love to
host volunteers coming to both create
new ministries and to assist with
current outreaches. A youth program
is needed along with a renewal of the

workers, and equipment are always

poor speak only the local
languages, and ICPE hosts a
weekly ministry geared to them.

Healing and Deliverance held by the
Catholic Charismatic Renewal of
Australia.
The ICPE Mission is well-known in
India through their SOM and close
collaboration with the bishop and
Diocese. They are frequently
requested to assist with Diocesan and
various groups‟ and organizations‟
outreaches and retreats. They recently
gave a retreat at St. Philomena‟s
Nursing College on „Healing our
relationship with God and others‟ for
two hundred nurses. Another retreat
was held for Medical College Students
at St. John‟s College. Diana and Fritz
speak internationally on topics of sin
and salvation, Theology of the Body
and sexuality, and inner healing. ICPE
missionaries will soon teach Natural
Family Planning.

located in the northern district of
Bishan, Singapore, with one full–
time staff member: Amilia Chai.
Presently, the ICPE flat near the city
center houses Amilia along with

The focus of ICPE Mission
Singapore is to empower men and

They do youth retreats and have
teachings on pro-life topics such
as the Catholic teachings of
procreation and marriage. Titus
teaches the Theology of the Body.

ICPE USA is the newest ICPE
Mission Center to be established. It
is currently in its beginning stages,
having opened in late 2009. The
Administrative Offices of the ICPE
Mission are located in the nearby
town of Stayton. The Bentz‟ family
homestead in Scio, Oregon, called
“The Blue Den Ranch” served as the
community home base for the first
year. Soon after the arrival of the
Fromonts, the first residential
mission house moved to Sublimity.
The ICPE Mission in Oregon is
blessed to have both expressions of
the ICPE Community present.

The seed for ICPE Mission USA was
sown many years ago when Julie
Bentz, sister of Clint Bentz,
attended a School of Missions in
Malta. Soon after, Julie and Clint‟s
father, Deacon Ron Bentz, began
cultivating the dream for a similar
school to be established in Oregon.
He did not live to see the dream
become a reality, but it has been
continued by Clint with the support
of his family, brothers, and
sisters. The first prayer gathering of
this newly-formed mission
community was held in the sitting
room of Barbara Bentz, who,
although ill, was able to be present
for this momentous occasion. In

this, she was able to witness the fruits
of what she and her husband had
prayed, labored, and hoped for before
she went home to be with the Lord.
ICPE Mission USA serves the local
Vicariate (a sub-grouping of parishes
within a Diocese) by running and
coordinating their Youth Ministry
Program, including High School and
Middle School Youth Programs, and
implementing the Vicariate-wide
Confirmation Formation Program.
The youth have attended multiple
youth conferences, seminars, and
concerts nation-wide. In the future,
the mission would like to create a
Young Adult Ministry.
Karol and Karolina recently moved to
the United States from Poland to
serve the local high school as
Campus Ministers, also taking part
in the ICPE mission work intrinsic to
their lives.

internationally-used School of
Mission template. It will be held in
Mt. Angel, Oregon in the summer of
2011.
A vision of ICPE Mission USA is that
of Hispanic Ministry outreach.

in Medellin, Colombia, the mission
would like to assist the local Church
in developing an effective Hispanic
Ministry Program.

World Mission Sunday 2010 ushered

in a new event for the mission. ICPE
Mission USA members held an ICPE
World Mission Sunday Event, where
both domestic and global aspects of
the Mission and the humanitarian
initiative HopeXchange were
displayed and promoted. Visitors
experienced an international Catholic
lay mission through international
food and prayers, presentations, talks,
and information stands.
