Introduction

Human Computer Interaction using Hand Gestures, aims to revolutionize the way users
interact with a computer by minimizing the use of the keyboard and mouse. This is
achieved by incorporating various hand gestures as means of inputs for a computer. Basic
operations like minimizing application windows, sliding window, rotating or zooming an
image and movement of mouse can be achieved using motion detection.

Objective

The main aim of our project is to provide a convenient and easy to use interface to
computer users by incorporating hand gestures for them to perform basic operations in a
Windows environment. The project has been developed keeping in mind the following
objectives:

• To include hand gestures that are easy to perform

 • The GUI should be simple and elegant.

• The gestures, should be easy to learn and be intuitive to the user.

• No special hardware (other than a webcam) or software requirements should be

needed to run the programs.

• The program should integrate seamlessly into the Windows environment.

• It should not hog on the system resources.

Technical Details

Languages Used

• C++ for developing the Gesture Recognition module.

• Java for developing the interface.

Library Used

• OpenCV (Open Computer Vision) 1.1 for using various motion detection
algorithms.

IDEs Used

• Dev-C++ designed by BloodShed labs for designing the Gesture Recognition module.
• Netbeans 6.9.1

Applications

The MOTION RECOGNITION system has a wide scope and a wide range of
applications. Some of its applications are:

• The hand gesture recognition module of the project can be used to replace the
mouse.
• The whole system can be used in regular computers to enhance computer human
interaction.
• Games based on hand gestures can be developed for leisure.
Features

The Motion detection software aims to revolutionize the way users interact with a
computer by minimizing the use of the keyboard and mouse. This is achieved by
incorporating various hand gestures as means of inputs for a computer. Basic operations
like minimizing application windows, sliding the current window and rotating or
zooming an image can be achieved using motion detection.

Extensions

Extensions are endless. The application can be improved by adding few extensions like:

• Optimized Color Detection for complex backgrounds.

• Better Gesture Recognition.
• Extension from Windows Based Platforms to other Platforms as well.
