The myths that once grounded our identity have become bankrupt. Six-
ties-era pan-Latinamericanism, la mexicanidad (unique, monumental,
undying), and Chicanoismo(with thorns and a capital C) have all been
eclipsed by processes of cultural borderizationand social fragmentation.
Like it or not, we are now denationalized, de-mexicanized,transchicani-
zed, and pseudo-internationalized.And worse, in fear of falling into a
new century we refuse to assume this new identity, roaming around ins-
tead in a BermudaTriangle (172).
