Next is the Greek columns

The ancient Greek were skilled architects. They invented the three types of columns to support their
building These were the minimalist Doric and the ionic and the fancy-intricated Corinthian
Let’s see each of those.

DORIC COLUMN

Doric is a large square block at the top called the abacus with

The most famous place where you can still see Doric columns today is
the Parthenon Greece.

IONIC COLUMN

Ionic column is taller and slenderer than the Doric column. Its
shafts are designed with a slight bulge to make it appear straight
Its base is large and looks like stacked rings

The most famous place where you can still see ionic temples of
Athena

CORINTHIAN COLUMN

The Corinthian column is the most decorative. Its capitals are decorated
with leaves and scrolls. Like the ionic. Its shafts have a slight bulge to
make it look straight
Its base is the tallest among the three

The most famous place where you can still see Corinthian columns
today is at the temple of the sybil, Rome

Nearly, every public building in ancient Greece incorporated either of these designs.
Even today, these designs are still used.

ANCIENT ROME

Around 200 BCE, the roman empire began to expand. Majority of Europe fell under Rome. Roman cities
grew and required large amounts of water. Romans built aqueducts to carry water to long distance.

The PONT DU GARD is the most famous part of the

roman aqueduct. It crosses the garden river and measure 49-
meter-high and 275 meter long. It is a UNESCO World
heritage site since 1985

Nowadays, all that is left of the huge arena is a ruin. The marble seats and intricate decoration that once
graced it were stolen long time ago. It was restored somewhat in the 1990s.

Roman Pantheon

The pantheon, which means “temple of every gods”

used to be a roman temple commissioned by Marcus
Agrippa during the reign of emperor Augustus (27BCE-
14 CE)
The building has a circular structure with a portico of
huge granite materials Corinthians columns under a
pediment

Portico is an Italian term to describe a porch leading to

the entrance of a building. Almost 2000 years after it was built, its dome is still the world’s largest
unreinforced concrete dome. It is one of the best preserved ancient roman structure in the history. Even up
to this day, it has been in continuous use.

Roman Busts

Ancient roman created remarkably realistic portrait sculptures or

buts.
They not only look like the persons they portray but also offer a
glimpse into their personalities.

Look at to this buts the buts of Euripides 330 BC in Pio Clementino Museum, Vatican.
The smile lines around the eyes and the slight upturn in the mouth make Euripides seem friendly, yet a
little worried.

In the other areas, roman sculpture borrowed heavily from the Greeks in fact, many of the well-known
artist of the ancient Rome were Greek themselves.
