LEARNING PORTFOLIO 3

I. Textbook questions
1. Briefly explain any three specific situations where listening will be an important part of your
life.
- You go to work on your first day, and your supervisor is giving you instructions on how
things operate in the company. In this case, not only do you have to pay close attention to what
your supervisor is telling you, you also have to process the information you are listening to and
memorize them as well.
- You are doing Chemistry experiment in the laboratory room. Your teacher is giving you
guidances and important notices. You have to carefully listen to your teacher and keep in mind
what he/she says so as not to cause yourself (and your friends) any unexpecting problem.
- You are filling a form to attend the highschool graduation exam. Each of you are given
1 copy only, and should you make any mistake, you will have to pay for another copy. It is
important that you strictly follow the teacher’s instruction on filling the form, which require
intense concentration in order to perceive the right information.

2. List six elements of the supportive climate. Give an example for a time when you have
witnessed each.
- Description
Ex: One afternoon, when I was sitting in my class, reading the materials for the upcoming lesson
with my friends. There was a group of students sitting right behind us, chatting and shouting all
so loudly that was actually bothering everyone else. So my friend turned around and told them
“I am feeling a little bit distracted due to you guys making so much noise”.
- Problem Orientation
Ex: My Management class is having a debate session every 2 weeks, but due to the Coronavirus
epidemic, it is impossible for each group to gather and work on the ideas and arguments on the
spot (as our teacher requires) via our school’s current tool for online class “Zoom”. After
consideration, we decided that students from HCMC can gather together, and students outside
HCMC can still discuss via another means of media like Zalo or Messenger.

2
- Spontaneity
Ex: In BC class, I am working in a group with a girl who is very good at speaking. While others
need to prepare a script of what they will present in the presentation, she just notes downs very
few keywords and present them freely and fluently.
- Empathy
Ex: When I came to my seniors talking about the problems I accounted during my study in
university, most of them just laughed and told me that when I got to year 2 I would experience
the “true pain”. However, there was a girl, Duyen, told me that she experieced the same
problems as mine, and she gave me some advice on how I can change myself to adapt to the
university environment.
- Equality
Ex: This semester, I added 1 more subject to my schedule, and I was the only student who was
born in 2001 in a class full of seniors. When the teacher told us to form our own groups, some
seniors actually asked me to join their group despite my lacking in experience, and they also
assisted me in some matter I did not understand without any discrimination.
- Provisionalism
Ex: When I was in high school, in Literature class, we would note down what the teacher said
word by word. However, the class moniter was not doinhg the same note-taking style, she was
drawing fish bone map. Astonishing as it may seem, she actually memorize all the main points of
the lessons, and she actually scored higher points than other students. After that, the teacher
told us to try new not-taking styles to find the most suitable one, so that we can understand the
lessons better.

3. Identify three ways you can apply your knowledge of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs (Figure
10.4, Braun et. al. textbook) to improve your professional and interpersonal communications.
- In long conventions or seminars, people sitting in long hours may suffer from hunger
and problems with blood circulation. Therefore, to deal with this situation, there will be break(s)
at midtime and light snacks are provided to satisfy their physical needs.
- Back then, I needed to find some guestspeakers for our workshop about “live greener”,
and when I wrote them proposal emais, at first I would express our appreciation to their
professional knowledge and experience in the field so as to meet their recognition needs, after
that I would offer the proposal.

3
- When working in a group, besides discussion about the works assigned, we also spend
some times chatting to each other about common things or problems so that everyone could
help each other overcome them. By doing it, we establish strong sense of cooperation based on
the thoughts of belonging to the group and the intimate relationship we have among members.

II. Portfolio Reflection

The reading materials provides me with useful tips on how to improve listening and
responding skills, along with practical guidelines on maintaining the interpersonal realtionships
and some techniques for better communication with customers. The parts I find most appeal to
was that mentioned the positive emphasis and how to create you-attitude. At first, the terms
sounded confusing to me, but the constructive examples given were doing me a world of good
as I could fully understand them, and more important, learnt how to use them. As it has been
difficult for me to maintain communication with others, and I also had problems dealing with
customers at work, I hope that applying the you-attitude may help me sound more polite and
persuasive. Changing is always a hard work, but I will try to apply this in everyday
communication to form the habit of communicating professionally.
