Here are some 5S guidelines that can be applied at your workplace.

I. Seiri (Sort)
About e-Quality 1. Separate the unnecessary items from the necessary items within

 Keep clean papers on the assigned shelves. Store scrap
papers and used envelopes in another assigned location

where you can easily retrieve or within your reach.
 Keep novelty items or kitchen utensils away from your

inside your drawers.
 Place personal items or displays on top of your desk like
pictures of loved ones, paper-weights, etc., where they
are less a nuisance to your daily activities.
2. Organize your files for easy identification.
 Arrange files alphabetically or by category (e.g., personal,
office related, etc.).
2. Seiton (Systematize)
1. Label items and their locations systematically. This way, even if
you're on leave people will know exactly where you want specific
items to be placed (e.g., important files, borrowed office
supplies, etc.).
2. Store goods for first-in-first-out retrieval.
3. Put frequently used items nearer to the user.
4. Make things visible to reduce searching time, e.g., use color-
coded folders to identify personal files from office files.
3. Seiso (Sweep)
1. Allot three (3) to five (5) minutes cleaning daily of work area
before work starts and after you leave your work place.
2. Assign owner to each machine. Person using the machine is
responsible for to clean it.
3. Prevent causes of dust and dirt by daily cleaning your work area.
4. Keep potential danger zones in your work area safe from you and
from your officemates.
 Pointed items should be kept in a safe location. Keep
scissors, forks or knives in your drawer.
 Defective electrical outlets, hanging cables, and
protruding nails on your desk should be attended to as
soon as possible. Post warning signs on this area if not
acted upon immediately.
 Turn off your personal computer and other electrical
devices properly before leaving the office.
 Keep your chair neat and properly arranged before you
leave the office. Keep it under your desk.

1. Use of visual control signs.

5. Shitsuke (Self Discipline)
1. Keep everything you did part of your daily routine. Make the 5S
habit your habit.
 Wash hands after going to the toilet.
 Wash hands before and after meals.
 Eat and smoke at designated areas
 Keep workplace always clean and orderly.
 Wear clean uniform and shoes.
 Follow safety rules.
 Put things back in their proper place after use.
 Work according to standards.
 Observe proper office decorum.
