READING PROGRAMS AND ACTIVITIES

In one with the Department of Education in battling illiteracy and promoting reading, Cabu
Elementary School devices activities that aims not only to improve learners reading ability but also
cultivate in them the joy and love of reading.
1. One on One
A traditional reading intervention that still proved to be efficient. In here, the teacher
teaches the learner one by one. Teachers conduct this during the remedial class and
whenever possible when they are with the students. This strategy proves to be highly
effective as the teacher can track the progress of the learners. This strategy is employed for
remedial and corrective reading.

2. Read Aloud
It is another traditional reading. But unlike one on one is not only for remedial and
corrective reading. Read Aloud is also done to share to learners the joy and love of pleasure
reading. This boosts learners’ interest in reading, arouses their curiosity and more
importantly, it improves their comprehension as well. Read Aloud is done by teachers daily.

3. Mother and Daughter/Mother and Son

Like Read Aloud, this strategy aims to boost learners’ interest in reading, arouse their
curiosity and improve their comprehension as well. In this strategy, the mother and the
daughter or son work together in a storytelling activity. They give candies and prizes to
those who will be able to answer questions correctly making the activity more fun and
exciting.

4. Ate and Kuya Storytelling

It is similar to Mother and Daughter/Son, but instead of the mothers and
daughters/sons, learners from higher grades do the storytelling to the learners of lower
grades. This creates excitement to the learners therefore increasing their interest for
reading.
In this activity, both the storytellers and the listeners benefit. The story tellers improve
their reading ability, confidence, and servility. The listeners on the other hand were
encouraged and motivated to read. Their interest aroused and moreover, their listening
skills are improved.

5. I Read to the Principal

This is one of the most anticipated reading activity at school. Learners who were chosen
to read feel honoured and privileged. This increases their motivation to improve. Learners
who read to the principal are given bookmarks as tokens.

6. Door Book Cover

This activity highlights the chosen favourite book of a section. They will decorate their
doors with the book cover of their chosen story. This arouses children’s interest in books
and brings out their creativity as well.

7. Private Partnership
Good Samaritan Colleges has conducted 2 book donation and storytelling activities with
the initiative of theSchool English Coordinator and support of the School Head.
