Part – B Max.Marks:50
ANSWER ANY FIVE QUESTIONS. EACH QUESTION CARRIES 10 MARKS.
11. a) Write the differences between system and control volume. Explain the different [6M]
types of systems with examples.
b) Show that heat is a path function and not a property. [4M]
12. a) Explain with a neat sketch the working principle of a constant volume gas [5M]
thermometer
b) A turbo compressor delivers 2.33m3/sec. at 0.276 MPa, 430C, which is heated at [5M]
this pressure to 4300C and finally expanded in a turbine which delivers 1860 Kw.
During the expansion there is a heat transfer of 0.09 MJ/sec. to surroundings.
Calculate turbine exhaust temperature.
14. a) Sketch and explain the construction and working of throttling calorimeter used for [5M]
determining the dryness fraction of steam in a boiler.
b) 1 kg of steam of a pressure of 1 bar and 0.8 dry is compressed in a cylinder to a [5M]
pressure of 2 bar. The law of compression is pv 1.2 = C. Find
(i) the final condition of steam
(ii) the change in internal energy (iii) the heat transfer.

15. a) Deduce the equation PVγ = constant for an adiabatic process. [5M]
3 0
b) A gas occupies 0.034 m at 600 kPa and 85 C. It is expanded in the non-flow [5M]
process according to the law pV 1.2 = constant to a pressure of 60 kPa after which
it is heated at constant pressure back to its original temperature. Sketch the
process on the p-v and T-s diagrams, and calculate for the whole process the
work done, the heat transferred. Take
Cp = 1.047 kJ/kgK and Cv = 0.775 kJ/kgK for the gas.
16. a) Discuss the use of air standard cycle analysis for the internal combustion [4M]
engines
b) An engine of 250 mm bore and 375 mm stroke works on Otto cycle. The [6M]
clearance volume is 0.00263m3. The initial pressure is limited to 25 bar, find the
following:
(i) The air standard efficiency of the cycle.
(ii) The mean effective pressure for the cycle.
17. a) [5M]
Define entropy and show that for an irreversible process
b) A piston-cylinder arrangement contains 0.03 m3 of nitrogen at 1bar and 290K. [5M]
the piston moves inwards and the gas is compressed isothermally and reversibly
until the pressure becomes 4 bar. Determine change in entropy and work done.
Assume nitrogen to be a perfect gas.
18. A closed rigid cylinder is divided by a diaphragm into two equal parts, each of [10M]
volume 0. 1 m3. Each compartment contains air at a temperature of 20°C. The
pressure in one compartment is 2.5 MPa and in the other compartment is 1 MPa.
The diaphragm is ruptured so that the air in both the compartments mixes to
bring the pressure to a uniform value throughout the cylinder, which is insulated.
Find the net change in entropy for the mixing process.
