PROJECT MIMs Grade 8

G8 MIMs # 1 – WEEK 1 – 1st QUARTER

FACTORING POLYNOMIALS WITH COMMOM MONOMIAL FACTOR

LEARNING COMPETENCY: Factor completely different types of polynomials

(polynomials with common monomial factors, difference of two squares, sum and
difference of two cubes, perfect square trinomials, and general trinomials).

OBJECTIVE: Factorpolynomials with common monomial factor.

Factoring a polynomial means rewriting a polynomial as a

product of polynomial factors.

The Greatest Common Factor (GCF) of two or more terms is the

common factor having the greatest numerical factor and with
variables having the least degree.

Example 1: 3 x+ 6
The factors of 3x are 3 ,1 , x
The factors of 6 are 1,2,3,6
Therefore, the greatest common factor (GCF) is 3.
Divide each term of the polynomial by the GCF.
3x 6
+ and the result will give you x +2
3 3
Therefore, the factored form of the polynomial is equal to the GCF
multiplied by the quotient 3(x +2)
So, 3 x+ 6=3 (x+ 2)

Example 2: 25 x 6+ 10 x 4 −15 x2
The factors of 25 x 6 are1,5,25 , x , x , x , x , x , x
The factors of 10 x 4 are 1, 2 ,5 ,10 , x , x , x , x
The factors of 15 x 2 are 1 ,3 , 5 , 10 , x , x
Therefore, the greatest common factor (GCF) is 5 x 2.
Divide each term of the polynomial by the GCF.
25 x 6 10 x 4 15 x2 4 2
2
+ 2
− 2
=5 x +2 x −3
5x 5x 5x
Write the factored form of the polynomial.
5 x 2( 5 x ¿ ¿ 4 +2 x2 −3)¿
So, 25 x 6+ 10 x 4 −15 x2 =5 x 2 (5 x ¿ ¿ 4+ 2 x 2−3) ¿
Example 3: 16 x 5 y 3−10 x 2 y 4
The factors of 16 x 5 y 3 are 1,2,4,8,16 , x , x , x , x , x , y , y , y
The factors of 10 x 2 y 4 are 1 , 2, 5 , 10 , x , x , y , y , y , y
The GCF of 16 x 5 y 3 and 10 x 2 y 4 is 2 x2 y 3
Divide each term of the polynomial by the GCF.
16 x 5 y 3 10 x 2 y 4 3
2 3
− 2 3
=8 x −5 y
2x y 2x y
Write the factored form of the polynomial.
2 x2 y 3 (8 x 3−5 y)
So, 16 x 5 y 3−10 x 2 y 4=2 x 2 y 3 (8 x 3−5 y )
