As we said, MIG is the most versatile and the easiest one to learn; TIG is the most aesthetically pleasing;
stick and arc produce the strongest welds and can operate under less than desirable conditions
The 6013 electrode is best used for light to medium penetration on a thin metal, or sheet metal. The
6011 electrode offers more penetration than the 6013 so you can weld a slightly thicker material
Hundreds, if not thousands, of stick electrodes exist, but the most popular are mild steel electrodes,
which fall into the American Welding Society (AWS) classification A5. 1. These include the 6010, 6011,
6012, 6013, 7014, 7024 and 7018 electrodes
6013 has all the characteristics of 6010 but can be used with AC or DC current; it has less penetration
and delivers a better-looking weld
7018 electrodes contain a thick flux with high powder content and are one of the easiest electrodes to
use. These electrodes produce a smooth, quiet arc with minimal spatter and medium arc penetration.
Many welders use 7018 electrodes to weld thick metals such as structural steeL
The best all-around welding rod would be the 6011, especially for the DIY'er and hobbyist. With 3/32
and 1/8 size rods on hand, the 6011 will get the majority of your jobs done. It is a fast-fill freeze rod, runs
on both ac/dc and handles dirty contaminated jobs better than other electrodes
TIG welding produces cleaner and more precise welds than MIG welding or other Arc welding methods,
making it the strongest. That said, different welding jobs may require different methods, while TIG is
generally stronger and higher in quality, you should use MIG or another method if the job calls for it
Steel
Steel is the easiest metal to weld, hence why it is the most popular form of metal for welding. In fact,
carbon steel is the cheapest metal to buy on the market. Steel welding often involves stick welding, MIG
welding, and tig welding. Steel is the first and most important part of welding
Aluminum
Aluminum Welding
Let's Work Together! Aluminum is a nightmare for welders. It is considered the most difficult metal to
weld, because, in its ore or alloy form, it has various physical and chemical properties that need to be
understood in detail before working on it
Stick welding can be used to weld steel, iron, aluminum, copper, and nickel. Unlike stick welding, gas
metal arc welding (or GMAW) does not have a coating over the electrode rod. Instead, the welding gun
disperses a shielding gas that protects against contaminants.
