Experiment No:04

Name of the experiment: Design and analysis of RC triggered Half wave rectifier (HWR) and
Full wave rectifier (FWR) to control the load power.

Objectives:

 To design RC triggering circuit to trigger SCR.

 To study the performance of the RC triggered HWR and FWR.

Theory: It is possible to control the amount of power reaching the load by altering the
proportion of the half cycle over which the SCR conducts. This can be achieved by using an SCR
circuit that incorporates phase control of the input gate signal. Using SCR circuit with phase
control, it can be seen that the SCR gate signal is derived from an RC circuit consisting of R1
,VR1 and C1 before the diode D1.Typically to give complete control of the 50% of the cycle
available for conduction with an SCR ,the phase angle of the gate waveform must vary between
00 and 1800.

Discussion:

Firstly we have experimented have wave rectifier and then full wave rectifier. In
half wave the out put is found half portion of the sine wave. In full wave the
output is found full portion of the sine wave.

The resistor R is gradually varied in step by step. The firing angle is kept from 0 to
90.

In tis experiment we have learnt how to design RC triggering circuit ,the

operation of RC triggered circuit and controlling the load power of HWR and FWR
using RC triggering circuit.
