Elementary Korean (First Semester)

Objectives :
This course is designed to develop the four language skills--speaking, listening, reading and
writing-- in Korean. It covers the basic grammatical structures and vocabulary necessary for
basic conversation, reading comprehension, and writing to have the students build a solid
foundation for further study in the Korean language. The course also provides useful
information concerning culture (where culture touches on language and communication) and
everyday life in Korea.

* Speaking : Ability to maintain simple face-to-face conversations by asking and answering


simple questions entirely in Korean.
* Listening : Ability to comprehend the learned materials.
* Writing : Ability to write simple sentences and expressions.
* Reading : Ability to comprehend simple texts.

Class Hours : Every Tuesday ~ Friday 7:30AM to 8:30AM

Testing :
1. Tests are based upon an accumulation of all materials covered up to the date of test.
2. Types of the tests :
* Periodic dictation (vocabulary & Sentences)
* Writing tasks on designated topics
* Listening comprehension
* Conversation performance

Evaluation of students’ performance:
1. It is based on attendance (including Lab attendance), homework, class participation &
performance, preparation for the lesson, all quizzes, exams, conversation performance,
and writing assignments. Tests are based upon accumulation of all materials covered up to
the date of test.
2. Being chronically late (more than 5 minutes) or unprepared will negatively influence your
final grade.
3. Level of skill at which each student began the course and amount of progress each student
makes are taken into consideration.

Attendance and Performance 30 %
Homework 30 %
Bi-Weekly Quizzes & Exams 20 %
Speaking & Writing 10 %
Voc. Quiz & Dictation 10 %

Make-up policy :
1. No make-ups for daily vocabulary quizzes or dictations will be given.
2. For other quizzes and exams, students are allowed one make-up during the entire
semester in case of serious emergency.

Please note :
1. Students should note that for language courses a minimum grade of 70 for each
semester is required before they may proceed to the next stage.
2. Class attendance is mandatory. The three absences are permitted for emergencies
only. More than three absences will negatively affect the grade. Also, please note that
three lateness will count as one absence.
3. The written assignments should be submitted on time. Late homework will negatively
affect the grade.
