TANK SEGREGATION FOR CARGO OIL
THE NEW GENERATION
The Frontline OBO carrier can be operated in the following three modes :
-Solely as oil tanker
-Solely as dry cargo bulk carrier
As a combination carrier alternating as oil carrier and dry cargo bulk car-
rier.

A. As oil tanker
When the Frontline OBO carrier is working as an oil carrier (alternating
only between oil cargo and ballast), the difference to a modern double skin
tanker is only the cargo hatches.
The tightss of the cargo hatches is very important and consequently there
has been put in much effort to achieve a tight and safe design.
Regarding stability, previous generations of OBO's had significant limita-
tions as compared to tankers. This new generation has however, the same
stability as a modern double skin tanker. There is a great flexibility, and the
stability requirements do not cause any hindrance in the practical operation
of the vessel. Compared with a conventional single skin tanker, the unload-
ing operation is faster for the OBO due to quicker final discharge, cow and
stripping.

B. As dry cargo bulk carrier

When the Frontline OBO carrier is working as dry cargo bulk carrier, the
vessel has no limitations compared to a conventional bulk carrier. On the
contrary, all the hold cleaning facilities make it a more advanced bulk
carrier.

C. As combination carrier
When the Frontline OBO carrier is working as a combination carrier it has
to shift between oil mode and dry mode. The OBO vessel is primarily de-
signed for this type of combined operation and consequently systems for
cleaning of cargo holds are more advanced and efficient than on a crude
oil carrier or a bulk carrier. The following features make the Frontline OBO
a very good combination carrier and a much better OBO than the previous
generation of OBO's :

-Cargo holds with clean surfaces internally almost without obstructions

-Tank bottoms are smooth and sloping towards the suction wells.
-All cargo holds are painted above lower stools and hopper tanks.
-Completely separated piping, operational and cleaning systems between
oil and dry cargo mode.
-Easily accessed/inspected main valves and wells
-Double rows of hatch cover packings with compression bars of
stainless steel
-Possibility to collect dry cargo residues, eductor discharged to deck.
-Two programmable cleaning machines in each cargo tank/hold.
-Three slop tanks.
-One stripping pump and one stripping eductor for use in oil mode.
One common holds bilge eductor and one stripping eductor in each hold
for use in dry cargo mode.
-High degree of safety against oil pollution with double skin and possibility
to blank off all connections to the sea.
-High degree of safety against gas leakages by gas detectors for ballast
tanks, cofferdam, pipe tunnel and upper and lower stool.
Possibility to inert all these spaces.
