The Lesbian & Gay Big Apple Corps Symphonic Band Honors

Pulitzer Prize- and Academy Award-winning Composer John Corigliano at

Fall 2010 Concert Come Follow the Band!

NEW YORK, Nov. 29, 2010 – This week, the Lesbian & Gay Big Apple Corps
Symphonic Band will present its fall concert, Come Follow the Band: From Mendelssohn
to The Beatles, under the baton of Artistic Director and Conductor Brian Worsdale on
Sat., Dec. 4, 2010 at 8 p.m. The band will perform this concert, the first in its 31st concert
season, at Peter Norton Symphony Space, located at 2537 Broadway at 95th Street.

Come Follow the Band is a collection of masterworks that will provide audiences with an
understanding of how the sounds of rock ‘n’ roll made famous by The Beatles and Earth,
Wind & Fire evolved from earlier periods of music. This program will also highlight some
of the milestone works for symphonic band that defined the repertoire and fast became
audience favorites.

Pulitzer Prize- and Academy Award-winning Composer John Corigliano will be honored
during this concert with the Lesbian & Gay Big Apple Corps Profile in Leadership Award.
Each year, the band gives this award to honor exemplary contributions to both the music
and the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender communities.

A talented composer who creates orchestral works acclaimed by both the classical and
pop culture worlds is rare, and Corigliano has one of the most widely celebrated bodies
of work any composer has created over the last forty years. Corigliano wrote his
Symphony No. 1, which has become one of the most performed American orchestral
works written within the last few decades, in response to the AIDS crisis. The band will
honor Corigliano with a performance of his Gazebo Dances.

Additional pieces on the program include First Suite in E-flat by Gustav Holst, a
milestone work that accelerated the symphonic band movement; Selections from
Oklahoma! by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II, a landmark show that
changed the direction of musical theater; and a medley of music from the Cirque du
Soleil Las Vegas show LOVE, a tribute to The Beatles as one of the critically praised
and commercially successful bands of all time.

Accomplished Guest Conductor Jonathan Strasser and Host Raphael Miranda from
WNBC channel 4 make this evening complete.

Come Follow the Band will play Sat., Dec. 4 at 8 p.m. at Peter Norton Symphony Space,
2597 Broadway at 95th Street, New York, NY. Tickets range from $17 - $25 and can be
purchased online at lgbac.org, by telephone at 212.864.5400, or in person at the Peter
Norton Symphony Space Box Office.

The 2010/11 season media sponsors are NEXT Magazine and WNYC. The band also
