3 Roles in Multi-cam

VT Mixer:
 Vision Mixers work closely with the Director to deliver the visual
experience as broadcast. They choose which feeds are used from multiple
cameras during live broadcasts. They cut from shot-to-shot, choosing the
precise sequence of images transmitted or recorded. Within this, Vision
Mixers must also choose which transition methods or effects, for example
wipes or mixes, to use.

 On Outside Broadcast projects, the Vision Mixer is located in the

production gallery of the OB van; in studio-based programmes, they will be
in the studio gallery.  The role is essentially a proxy for the Director, who is
entirely dependent on the Vision Mixer for the visual delivery of the
programme.

 This is a challenging, technically and creatively skilled role which requires

high levels of multi-tasking and very precise communications. It requires a
close knowledge of the programme’s running order, while also possessing
the skill to deal with unforeseen events on the fly during a live broadcast,
for example, and to deal with these in terms of alternative or modified
visuals.
VT Operator:
 Video tape (VT) operators work in television production and post-
production. They work on a wide range of programmes, including news, live
shows and outside broadcasts. VT operators also work in post-production
facilities houses, and are sometimes known as technical runners or tape
operators.

 VT operators perform a variety of tasks, including preparing tapes and

programmes for broadcast or for sale to other countries. Operators may
also be required to add inserts, captions and titles, operate slow-motion
equipment for action replays, for example during a sports programme,
record incoming satellite feeds and keep archives of material.

 VT operators work in studio galleries, editing suites and machine rooms,

usually surrounded by large banks of equipment. They must understand
how to read oscilloscopes, audio meters, TV and video signals, and know
how they work. They also need to understand compression, aspect ratio
and standards converters, and be able to use VT recorders (VTRs) in both
normal and abnormal settings.
Camera Operator:
 On multi-camera productions, camera operators work under camera
supervisors and receive instructions from the director when recording.
They sometimes talk to presenters to get the best picture composition.

 Camera operators work with the grips to move and set up camera
equipment and talk to the gaffers about lighting too. They sometimes have
a camera assistant working with them.

 On location, they often work in tandem with a sound recordist and take
instruction from the producer director.
