the Silencing the Self Scale, Dana Crowley Jack, copyright 1991, All Rights Reserved
Note: Items 1, 8, 11, 15, and 21 are reverse scored, with a possible range of total scores from 31 to 155.
Procedure for scoring:
First, reverse score the items 1, 8, 11, 15, and 21 listed above. To do so, a 1 becomes 5, or vice versa; 2
becomes 4, or vice versa, and 3 remains three. Then sum all the items, #1‐31. To find the subscale
scores, simply sum the items within each subscale.
Subscale 1: Externalized Self‐Perception (Items 6, 7, 23, 27, 28, 31)
Subscale 2: Care as Self‐Sacrifice (Items 1, 3, 4, 9, 10, 11, 12, 22, 29)
Subscale 3: Silencing the Self (Items 2, 8, 14, 15, 18, 20, 24, 26, 30)
Subscale 4: Divided Self (Items 5, 13, 16, 17, 19, 21, 25)
