I.Introduction

Driving laws in the Philippines are meant to ensure not just an orderly flow of
traffic and discipline among motorists but also the public’s safety on the road. We have
laws that require wearing seatbelts and motorcycle helmets as well as those that ban
people from driving when drunk and while using their mobile phones.

Road safety advocates and civil society groups have been pushing for stronger
measures that bridge the policy gaps, citing that the traffic and driving laws in the
Philippines lack teeth in certain aspects. It doesn’t take a legal expert to know that such
laws seriously and urgently need updating.

If lawmakers had to choose one of the driving laws in the Philippines to update,
this one should top the list. Republic Act 4136, also known as the Land Transportation
and Traffic Code, sets the legal speed limits and penalties for traffic violations such as
reckless driving, among other provisions.

The law is archaic, to say the least, having been enacted in 1964. Five decades
and six presidents have passed, but the law has never been amended.

II.Body

For the drivers and motorists, traffic rules and regulations should be familiar to
them for road safety. Ignorance of the RA 4136 to the drivers and motorists may result
in a high rate of road accidents like injuries and death and also damage of property.

Among the 3 respondent that I interviewed, all of them was a holder professional
drivers license. But only 2 of them were aware of RA 4136 an act that compiles the laws
relative to land transportation and traffic rules. Fortunately, the 2 licensed drivers have
aware of different traffic rules. They know what they doing when there is a police
checkpoint because they are aware that they are not violating any rules on the roads.
They say that, when traveling on the road, always make sure that always keep in your
wallet your vehicle or motor registration and your driver’s license and always wear your
helmet for your protection to prevent accidents and problems on the road.

The other respondent only had brief knowledge about traffic rules. He experience
once when he was crossed in a police checkpoint then he was taken by police because
he wasn’t wearing a proper helmet and shoes.

III.Conclusion

In conclusion, traffic laws, rules, and regulation awareness play important roles in
our roads and highways. Being aware of this law is not enough but taking action of it
better to save our lives. Many people know that road accidents cause injuries and death
but not aware of laws that preventing these accidents.
