What I Need to Knowtives

Welcome to this module in Performing order of operations involving addition

and subtractions of small numbers.

Here you can find enrichment exercises which will enhance your critical and
analytical thinking skills. This module includes varied and enough exercises, some of
them can serve as activity which allow pupil-parent interaction.

Have fun as you Learn!

HOW TO USE THIS MODULE

This module contains several lessons. To make the most out of them, you need to do the
following:
1. Scan the list of Learning Objectives to get an idea of the knowledge and skills you are
expected to gain and develop as you study the module. These outcomes are based on the
content standards, performance standards, and learning competencies of the K to 12
Curriculum Mathematics 2.

2. Take the What I Know. Your score will determine your knowledge of the lessons in the
module. If you get 100% of the items correctly, you may proceed to the next module.
Otherwise, you must go through the lessons.

3. Each Lesson aims to develop one of the learning objectives set for the module. It starts with
an activity that will help you understand the lesson and meet the required competencies.

4. Take your time in reading this module. Write down points for clarification. You may discuss
these points with your teacher.

5. Perform all activities and answer all worksheets. The activities and assessments are
designed to enhance your understanding of the lesson. The activities will also give you an
idea how well you understand the lessons. Review the lessons if necessary, until you have
achieved a satisfactory level of understanding.

6. At the end of the module, take the Post-Assessment to evaluate your overall understanding
about the lessons.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
At the end of the module, you should be able to:
 Perform Order of Operations Involving Addition and Subtractions of Small Numbers.

2
What I Know

Answer the following. Add 5 problems and go over your

Key answers before finalizing
1. 7+3–5= ______ 6. 11 – 3 + 8 = _____

2. 10 – 4 + 6 = ______ 7. 4 + 5 – 2 = _____

3. 13 + 3 – 2 = ______ 8. 10 – 7 + 9 = _____

4. 9+5–4= ______ 9. 16 + 7 – 10 =_____

5. 8–4+7= ______ 10. 21 – 10 + 7 =_____

Lesson 4: Order of Operations Involving

Addition and Subtraction
What’s In

Let’s review about addition and subtraction of small numbers.

Match the two equations/numbers sentences that will give
the same answer. Draw a line to connect them.

a. 10 + 2 = n 18 – 2 = n

b. 13 + 3 = n 25 – 6 = n

c. 10 + 10= n 16 – 4 = n

d. 15 + 4 = n 30 – 10 = n

3
What’s New

18 – 6 + 3 = ___

Look! Above is a number phrase. It is not a complete

number sentence since there is no answer yet.

Let us try to solve the number phrase above that contains

both addition and subtraction. You are asked to perform both
operations to find the answer.

How will we find the answer to the problem above?

What do you think will we do first?

4
What is It

In performing two operations in a number sentence the rule

for addition and subtraction is as follows:

 When addition and subtraction appear in a row, do them in the

order that they appear. That is beginning from LEFT TO
RIGHT.

From the number phrase “18 – 6 + 3 = ___.”

First subtract 6 from 18. 18 – 6 + 3 = ___

Then add 12 and 3. 12 + 3 = ___
The answer is 15. 12 + 3 = 15

Examples:
a. 8 + 4 - 6 = ____ b. 14 – 5 + 11 = ____
8 + 4 - 6 = ____ 14 – 5 + 11 = ____
12 - 6 = 6 9 + 11 = 20

Let us remember!

When a series of operation involving addition

and subtraction is given perform the operation as they
appear from left to right.

5
What’s More

Assessment 1
On the first line, write the answer for the first operation you
need to do. On the second line, write the final answer. The first
number is done for you.

1. 4–2+5= ___2___ __7___

2. 7+3–4= _______ ______
3. 15 – 13 + 10 = _______ ______
4. 16 + 12 – 14 = _______ ______
5. 17 + 13 – 19 = _______ ______

Assessment 2
Do the operations in proper order. Encircle your answer.
1. 5+8-2 = 11 21 22
2. 25 -15 + 14 = 16 24 30
3. 24 + 12 -11 = 18 19 25
4. 18 – 10 + 13 = 21 20 32
5. 16 + 12 – 18 = 10 15 20

Assessment 3
Read the following statements. Identify which operation
should be performed first. Write A for addition or S for
subtraction.
______ 1. What is the difference when 16 is subtracted from the
sum 20 and 30?

______ 2. Subtract 15 from the sum of 18 and 20.

______ 3. The difference of 7 and 3, added to 6 is what number?

______ 4. What is the sum when 26 is added to the difference of

19 and 10?
6
What I Have Learned
Let us talk about it.
1. What is the rule for performing addition and
subtraction in a row?

2. In what direction do you perform addition and

subtraction in a row?

3. If you do not perform the operation on the left first,

will you come up with the same answer?

What I Can Do

Read the problem. Write your answer to the question.

There are 20 boys and 14 girls in Grade 2 Mayumi Class. If

10 are absent, how many are present?

7
Post-Assessment
Answer the question by performing the proper order of
operation.
Do you know a person afraid of crossing a bridge?
What do we call the fear of crossing bridges?

For you to know that, you must solve the following. Then
write the letter of the question on the line above the answer in
the decoder to answer the question below. One is done for you.

A 2 + 8 – 3 = __7__ B 10 + 7 – 4 = ____

D 12 + 13 – 9 = ____ E 9 - 8 + 13 = ____

G 18 + 12 – 13 = ____ H 6 – 3 + 9 = ____

I 30 – 20 + 12 = ____ O 8 + 12 – 10 = ____

P 17- 16 + 4 = ____ R 15 + 3 – 9 = _____

Y 26 – 16 + 13 ____

___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___

17 14 5 12 23 9 10

___ ___ ___ ___ ___ _A_

5 12 10 13 22 7

8
Additional Activities

Perform the indicated operations. Write the final answer.

1. 5+4–6=

2. 3+6–4=

3. 12 – 6 + 7 =

4. 19 + 7 – 3 =
