What is a computer?

It is an electronic machine that reads data, processes data, produces information which can be stored for
future use.
What are the characteristics of a modern computer?

 It is a machine - Computer is a tool used to help people in a certain task and attain target objects such
as editing picture, and composing an attractive document.
 It is electronic - It uses electricity as a main source of power. Laptops have battery packs so that they
can even be use without plugging it in a socket.
 It is automatic - Computer have ‘programs’ or sets of instructions that usually reside within. Because
of the program. It can process a lot an of data and display an accurate output in a less expected time.
 It has memory - It has a part that enables it to store information that can be used for further
application. (e.I. Hard disk,RAM)
 It has logical function - Computer can perform task such as mathematical calculations

What are the Computer elements?

Elements of the Computer System

For the computer to work properly if all elements are present. These elements make up the computer
system. (Some experts referred as Computer Elements.)

Hardware. These are the physical parts of the computer which you can touch and feel.

Data. It refers to the raw facts the computer can manipulate. It could be in a form of text, graphics,

Computers have made a big influence in our society namely in business, education, travel,etc. Computers
make a lot of things easier for people which is why we can see them in almost everywhere.

In the classrooms, teachers use computers to facilitate learning.most schools also
use computer to educate students in using a computer. It can be used as a tool in
finding significant

Computers in Medicine
Doctors and nurses in hospitals are now using computers to help them
diagnose their patients’ illnesses easily. They also use computers to
communicate with other experts.

Computers in Businesses
 Banks use computers for fast and easy financial transactions.
 Shopping centers/malls department stores and supermarkets use
computers to encode the sales for the day.

Computers in Media and Entertainment


 People in the music industry use computers to produce better quality sounds of
music.
 Computers have helped cartoon animators in creating excellent animation
games, cartoons, and animated films.

Computers in Transportation
Computers are used to control traffic lights for the smooth flow of transaction. Light rail
transits (city train) are also controlled usingsophisticated computer system.

Computers in Communication
Computers allow people communicate,quickly and easily, with other
people in faraway places through E-mail.
Computers in Government Offices
Computers help people create identification cards with complete personal
information, picture, and signature and/or thumb mark attached to them within
a very short period of time. The Philippine Statistics Authority and Social Security System
are two of the services offered by our government.

Computers at Home
Computers help you create good projects such as cards, banners and
posters, make reports, and print pictures easier and faster.

through computer system.

Ten Commandment of Computer Ethics

The Ten Commandments of Computer Ethics were presented in 1992 by the Computer Ethics Institute. In the
document “In Pursuit of a Ten Commandments’, it was introduced for Computer Ethics” by Ramon C. Barquin
as means to create “a set of standards to guide and instruct people in ethical use of computers.”
