CONDITIONALS AND TAUTOLOGIES

A. Given a quote below:

“Pray as though everything    depended on God. Work as though everything depended on

you.”   by  St. Augustine.

Translate the quotation into four types of conditional statements (conditional, converse, inverse and
contrapositive).

if p, then q
1. conditional: if you pray as though everything depended on God, then you work as though
everything depended on you

if q, then p
2. converse: if you work as though everything depended on you, then you pray as though
everything depended on God

if -p, then -q
3. inverse:  if you don't pray as though everything depended on God, then you don't work as though
everything depended on you

if -q, then -p
4. contrapositive: if you don’t work as though everything depended on you, then you don't pray as
though everything depended on God
5. What is the inverse of the converse of the contrapositive in number 1? Explain your answer.

Contrapositive: (original statement)

if you don’t work as though everything depended on you, then you don't pray as though
everything depended on God

Converse of contrapositive: (switch -q->-p to -p->-q)

if you don't pray as though everything depended on God, then you don't work as though
everything depended on you

Inverse of converse of contrapositive: remove of all negations

if you pray as though everything depended on God, then you work as though everything
depended on you

Explanation:

The final answer will become a conditional statement since you reversed the contrapositive statement of (if -Q
then -P) to a conditional statement (if P then Q). In the end the truth value of what you started and what you
ended up with will be the same (which is true) since both conditional and contrapositive are logically equivalent of
each other.
