UCSU tri-exec status unknown

Although the elections for the
new UCSU tri-executives ended
on April 14, students are still wait-
ing to see who will be the deci-
sion-makers during the next 12
months.
When the preliminary results
are announced after elections end,
candidates have five days to file
an appeal contesting the results.
The appeals that are filed within
the time limit then go in front of
the Election Commissioner Corey
Fitze and his assistants. The deci-
sion from this bi-partisan commit-
tee can then be appealed further
to an appellate court, which ulti-
mately has the final say.
According to the UCSU office,
three appeals were originally filed
to the election commissioner. All
three appeals were denied by Fitze.
The Marvel ticket has since filed a
temporary restraining order with
the CU appellate court in order
to allow more time to bring the
appeals to court.
When approached for ques-
tioning, both the Marvel ticket
and the Class Act ticket cited
the restraining order and refused
to comment on the specifics of
the appeals. According to Fitze,
the order is a restriction on the
announcement of the results of
the election, nor on the appeals
process. Among those who refused
to comment were Israel Garcia and
Rob Duray of the Marvel ticket,
and Andrew Atchison and Charles
Johnson of the Class Act ticket.
The appeals process is a regu-
lar occurrence in the spring elec-
tions. Appeals are usually filed for
a variety of reason. Most common-
ly, appeals revolve around cam-
paign and or financial infractions
Fitze said there is opposi-
tion every year. Fitze also frankly
responded “no” to the question of
whether the appeals would amount
to any changes in the election.

Caffeine's addictive qualities hooking CU students

Is java giving you the jitters?
Caffeine is considered a psycho-
active drug because of the way
it stimulates the nervous system.
Terry McNally, a documentary
filmmaker, writer and producer,
compared the addictive qualities of
caffeine to alcohol and nicotine.
McNally presented “Coffee to
Meth — Our Nationʼs Love Affair
with Stimulants” at the Conference
on World Affairs this year. He is

cause psychological and physical
effects on the body.
“Caffeine is something that
one could develop a dependence
on,” said Stephen Bentley, the
coordinator for Substance Abuse
Services at Wardenburg Health
Center. “It is a diagnosable dis-
order just as alcohol dependence
and any of the other mood altering
substances. With that dependence
someone may become irritable
without a cup of coffee in the
morning. This kind of dependence
implies a built-up tolerance and
suffering from withdrawal.”
The addictive effects differ
greatly between individual people
and depends on whether they are
chronic or periodic coffee drink-
ers. Addiction is characterized by
a persistent pattern of behavior
despite negative consequences. In
the case of coffee, it refers to a
ritual use of caffeine.
“The simple advice is:
all things in moderation. The
American mentality is that some is
good and more is better,” Bentley
said. ”When it starts to follow an
addiction model is when the cof-
fee is causing problems and you
continue doing it anyway.”
Christina Reiter, a dietitian at
Wardenburg, agreed that modera-
tion is really the thing to remem-
ber. She recommends people con-
sume no more than two cups of
