1 Scope
UT Quality Inc. has designed this practical “hands-on” examination to demonstrate the
candidate’s ability to select and perform the applicable NDT technique, set up and
perform calibrations using Auto UT equipment, interpret and evaluate results in
accordance with applicable specifications, codes, standards, etc., as listed in the
references, and organize and report the results of the test. One flawed specimen shall be
tested, and the results analyzed by the person being considered for certification.

3 Definitions
Equipment Pe rformance Check: Are tests performed on equipment to verify its ability
to respond in an expected fashion with in a given tolerance.

Performance Check Certification: Often referred to as Equipment Calibration

Certificate; it is generated when the Performance Checks are completed successfully. A
sticker is placed on the Ultrasonic instrument to signify that the system performance has
been checked and has met the requirements.

Calibration Block: a Calibration Block is a Reference Block that is recognized by the

industry as a standard block, i.e. IIW Block, Rumpus Block, etc.

Reference Block: is a block designed as an ultrasonic reference for a specific inspection.

These blocks are custom built as required, and are usually constructed from actual
material.

4 Personnel Qualifications
Candidates taking this exam meet the requirements outlined in section 5 of UTQ -WP-
2004-00 (Latest Edition) “UT Quality Written Practice”

5 Safety Requirements
Personnel performing examinations will be aware of and will follow safety guidelines
laid out in UTQ -SM-2004 “UT Quality Safety Manual” during performance of
examination.

6 Pre-exam Inspection
Personnel performing this exam are responsible to ensure that they have the required
equipment and paper work, prior to performing this exam. Items required are listed
below:

1. Referenced standards
a. CSA Z662-99
b. ASME 5

2. Referenced UTQ Procedures

7 Pre-inspection Tests
Prior to inspecting examination test piece the performance checks and calibrations
detailed in this section should be performed by Level II Ultrasonic candidates.
The results will be documented on the appropriate forms.

7.1 Ultrasonic Performance Checks (UT Main)

To ensure reliable test results Equipment Performance Checks must be checked to verify
valid date, UT Main Horizontal & Vertical Linearity Calibrations. Exams received from
inspections performed without current Performance Check Certification are invalid.

8 Exam Requirements
8.1.1 Calibration Scan
One acceptable calibration scan shall be attained after loading the “Benchmark
Calibration”.

8.1.2 Weld Scan

A complete/acceptable scan of the relevant weld shall be done.

8.1.3 Weld Evaluation

After completion of an acceptable weld scan a full evaluation of the weld integrity shall
be done according to CSA-Z662- (Latest Edition)

8.1.4 Reporting of Results

Reporting shall consist of a calibration scan & weld scan, and the full evaluation report.

8.2 Reference Sensitivity

Reference Sensitivity is 80% +/- 2db for UT zone reflectors.

8.3 Scanning Sensitivity

Scanning Sensitivity is Reference Sensitivity.

8.4 Evaluation Level

Evaluation Level is Reference Sensitivity.

8.5 Criteria
All defects should be reported as required by CSA-Z662-99. (Section 7.2.12.8.3)
Recording threshold will be >40%

8.6 Practical Test Evaluation

Performance is measured based on 10 performance checkpoints selected to demonstrate
understand ing of test variables including, initial assembly of scanner, manual setup of
probes, calibration & weld scan, evaluation and reporting.
