FOREWORD
I am honoured to write the Foreword to this
important report from the Kashmir Institute for
International Relations (KIIR). Stolen Childhood
of Kashmir Children documents the suffering of
children living in Jammu & Kashmir under decades
of brutal occupation by India and its Armed Forces.
The research and case studies reveal the misery and
despair of children living in a conflict environment,
their dreams and hopes for a better life constantly
crushed.
Thousands of children have been blinded in pellet-
firing shotgun attacks by the Indian Armed Forces.
Thousands more have been illegally arrested and
imprisoned. Hundreds have been killed or died
in custody. Over 200,000 children have been
orphaned or half-orphaned in the conflict. Education
opportunities are impeded by frequent military
lockdowns, and the internet constantly shut down to
cut Kashmiris off from the world. Their employment
opportunities are minimal, and their physical and
mental health is a serious cause of concern. The
future for Kashmiri children is grim.
Stolen Childhood of Kashmir Children graphically
details the abuses by the Indian occupying forces
that are contrary to the Convention on the Rights
of the Child and its Optional Protocol. It is hard to
imagine the level of callousness of any Government
and its military that targets innocent children and so
blatantly disregards international law.
Jennifer McKay is an I applaud the KIIR team and authors, Altaf Hussain

crises. She has worked for tireless dedication over many years to bring the
plight of Kashmiri children into the global spotlight.

INTRODUCTION
Kashmir, which some would argue to be a colonial state, is now
becoming a society bereft of free thinking. Where speaking and
demanding the rights is taboo. The fear is suffocating. Imagine your
family and relatives reprimanding you for speaking your mind just
because the state doesn’t like the written words.
It is hard to imagine the state of mind of the adolescents or the youth
growing up with such atmosphere around them. It’s not only the
brunt of the physical subjugation faced by them, but it’s the brutal
occupation of their thoughts in their tender age which gets to them.
