Learning Opportunities/Procedure:
GOOD MORNING/AFTERNOON

STP STUFF
“I can improvise a melody using a rhythm I created.”
“I can play my improvisation on a virtual xylophone.”
- So last time I was here, we learned all about improvising. Does anyone remember
what improvising is? (It’s making up your own melody)
- Last time I was here, we improvised the melody to the rhythm I made. But now, I want
you to improvise using rhythms YOU made!
- I’m going to hand back the papers I collected a few classes ago so that you can see
the dinners you created.
- See how there are 8 boxes on one paper? I want you to perform a total of 8 boxes for
me. You’ll have 3 choices:
- You can do your top line twice, your bottom line twice, or your whole paper once. Like
this:
- Here is what I’d like you to do:
- WHEN I SAY GO, you’ll go find your xylophone on your chromebooks.
- Open your Chromebooks, go to your dashboard, find the big white S for Schoology.
Go to your courses, find music class, and click on Music Lesson Week 4, and click on
the little xylophone to make it big.
- You WILL need your headphones today!
- I’ll pass your papers back now.
- Get to your xylophone and start improvising. I want you to say the words out loud
while you improvise. Like this: turkey salt pepper bread.
- When you’re ready for me to come hear it, raise your hand and I’ll come over and
listen!
- If you get stuck, raise your hand and I’ll come help!

Closing Activity

THE GOODBYE SONG

Specific Differentiation Strategies

Information is presented in multiple ways

Students can volunteer to perform at different times, giving students that need more time to
coordinate the time they need
Students choose which beats they perform, allowing for self-differentiation.

Assessment:

FORMAL ASSESSMENT - TEACHER OBSERVATION

As students perform their improvisations for me, I’m evaluating them using this rubric:

I will record their scores on the class roster.
