Introduction to Pro/Engineer:

Modifying assemblies, top-down approach assemblies and sections of assemblies

In this tutorial you will learn the following:

1. Open an exiting assembly and modify existing parts inside the assembly
2. Create new parts inside the assembly (top down approach)
3. Create sections of the assembly: planar sections and offset sections

These topics will be demonstrated on the assembly provided to you in

Courseworks.

(right)

Part 1: modifying parts in assembly

1. Create a directory for your tutorial (e.g. h://tutorial_8). Make sure it is on
your network drive.
2. Copy your files from tutorial 5 to this directory (or download the tutorial
start files from Courseworks)
3. Open Pro/Engineer and set your working directory to h://tutorial8.
The following steps will be used to modify a part:

• Select the part from the model tree

• Click right mouse button and select “activate”. A green dot will
indicate that the part has been activated. It will appear on the left
of the part name in the model tree, figure 2.
• Select the component from the graphic window (it will become outlined
in red to indicated this). Figure 2
• Click RMB and select “Edit” to display and modify dimensions.
• Alternatively you can choose “Edit definition” to modify the component with additional features.

definition”. The pivot part will turn yellow and you will notice an extrusion tool chest appears at the
top tool bar. This is exactly the same tool chest that you used for creating the pivot part in
the part mode.

9. Edit the sketch of the pivot part and add the square and round holes as shown in figure 8.
10. Approve the sketch and the extrusion. Your part should look like in figure 9.

11. To return to the assembly mode with the pivot part un-activated: Select the assembly from the
model tree

RMB activate.
Part 2: creating parts in assembly mode

1. Select the “create part in assembly” button. A popup appears as in figure 10. Specify the name of the
part as “vertical_pin”. Press ok.

from

the model tree. Select “Edit” from the top menu and select
“repeat”.

The “component repeat” popup will appear as in figure 15.

10. Select the “Align” constraint and click “Add” then select the A_1

datum axis to indicate where the second pin should be inserted.

11. Click confirm and modify the color of the other pin to green. Your

assembly should look like in figure 16.

1.From the top toolbar click onto open the view manager and select the “Xsec” tab., figure 17.
2.
3.Select “new” and specify “Front_section” as the name of this planar section.
4.
Leave the options as in figure 18. Select done.

Next (figure 19) you will be asked to specify the section plane. Choose the “plane” option. Then select
the

“ASM_front” datum plane. This completes the definition of this planar section.

5. Regenerate your model and open the view manager. Under the “x_sec” tab select “Front section”. Click
RMB

then “Set Activate”, figure 20. Your part will appear as shown in Figure 21.

6. Turn the visibility on (see figure 20) your part will include “hatching”, Figure 22.

You can modify the section you defined previously to use color fill instead of hatching by choosing redefine (
from

figure 20) and then modifying the hatching to use “fill”. You can also exclude components. Typically, you
are

expected to exclude pins, ribs, and screws that should not have hatching.

1. Select Front_Section from the Xsec popup menu (Figure 20). Click RMB select “Redefine”. A new popup

appears as in figure 25.

2. Select “Hatching” option to modify the hatching style. A new popup menu appears as in figure 26.

3. From the popup of figure 26 you can now toggle between individual components by clicking on “Next
Xsec”,

“Prev Xsex” or “Pick Xsec”.

4. Keep toggling until you choose the hexagonal bolt part. You will see its hatching indicated by red lines.
Click

on “Excl Comp” to exclude this component from the parts that will be hatched.

5. Keep toggling until you choose the right vertical pin part. Choose “Fill” from the popup menu of figure 26
to

change its visibility style to fill instead of hatch.

6. You can also change the spacing of the hatching of each component by toggling between the
components using

“Next Xsec” or “Pick Xsec” and the by clicking on “Spacing” from figure 26. A new popup will appear as in

figure 27. Select “Double” or “Half” to modify the density of the hatching. To refresh the screen zoom in
and

out a bit using the middle mouse scroll wheel.

7. From the popup of figure 26 select the “Dim Values” option and then point at the pivot part and select it.
Pro/E

will overlay all the dimensions of this part on your section view.

8. Click “Done/Return” from the popup of figure 25.

9. When you are done your hatch should look like in figure 28.

1. Open the view manager.
Turn the visibility off and activate the “no cross section” option in the x_sec tab to display the full
2. assembly.
Create a new section. Call it “offset_section”.
3. Select “offset” option and “both sides” as shown in figure 29. Then choose “plane” and specify the top
surface

6.
Approve the direction of viewing the sketching plane.
7.
Select the right reference to be ASM_front.
8.
Specify your secondary references as ASM_front and ASM_right.
Draw the section lines starting from the vertical line and going sideways, figure 31.
