Background of the Study

According to the study, tourism industry in the Philippines is potentially at

risk from both natural and man-made disasters like terrorist threats and earthquakes.
Many of the travelers are concern about the safety and security of them when
traveling in the Philippines especially those who have children. It affects the tourism
as well as the economy of the Philippines. If this issue is not taken seriously the
tourism industry in the Philippines will surely decline. The tourism sector must plan
to anticipate these crises and manage the after effects better when, not if, they occur.
This case study shows how the inevitability of such ‘shocks’ and ‘wild card’ events
has been dealt with within the tourism sector and how the process of crisis
management has been developed. This article concludes that the discourse on crisis in
tourism raises fundamental concerns about the way that the notion of crisis is
conceptualized and what constitutes normality.

Statement of the Problem

There have been events that took place in the Philippines that made the
country seemingly dangerous to travel, this danger is not only caused by people but
also geological events. The kidnapping of tourists and beheading them in what used to
be a safe place to travel is happening in Bohol. And geological events like
Earthquakes made the scarcity of tourism and traveling in the Philippines worse. The
resorts in Batangas were also empty due to the Holy Week. Korea is known to be one
of the largest source of tourists in the Philippines but after the kidnapping and
gruesome murder of a Korean businessman named Jee Ick-joo, it highly dampened or
lessened the enthusiasm of Koreans from traveling in the Philippines. The dangers of
traveling in the Philippines is prominent around the world that made foreigners think
that the Philippines is highly abundant in poverty, thugs and gangs, corrupt
government, and a crime driven country which is always portrayed in international
media.

Alternative Courses of Action (ACA)

1. Does tourism affect the economy of the Philippines even with the above-
mentioned dillemas?
 Yes, tourism affect the economy of the Philippines because of all those
happenings, tourists are threatened to visit again in our country. They
think that Philippines is no longer a safe place. As the result of that,
our economy is the one that will be highly affected and the money that
will be gain from tourism will decrease.
 Determining the crisis level before proceeding to manage it is
important to the success of the team. Since all crises do not evolve out
of natural disasters, but can be caused by people, a false rumor, or
image problems faced by the area, crisis managers should judge the
situation correctly before deciding which strategies to follow.

2. Is there any good effects of tourism here in our country? Cite them
 Throughout recorded history, tourism has impacted on both positive
and negative sides. As there are positive impact and profit in this
tourism business, people will start to develop the particular destination.
But at the same time, the negative impact will also increase in turns of
environment, social and economy. Overcrowding and overuse of
natural resources, the construction of buildings and infrastructure, and
other activities associated with tourism, produce impacts on the
countries. These impacts may be not only physical, but also cultural.
And also the problem will increase when the number of tourists is large
or the resources are overused.
 Recommendations for the development of a tourism crisis task force
and plan of action can be generalized to practically all circumstances.
Most importantly, it is recommended that a tourism crisis task force be
established, to head the management of a disaster situation. The task
force can be established during non-crisis times, to be activated when
required.

3. Why is tourism that prominent in the Philippines even we are in third world
country?
 Philippines is not as wealthy as other country but we are rich in natural
resources. We are rich in land and water, two very important economic
resources, which support agriculture and fisheries; richly endowed
with minerals and other natural sources with huge potential for
renewable energy. Our country has beautiful beaches, a good number
of soaring mountains and vast forests with stunning landscapes, breath-
taking rivers and waterfalls are ideal for ecotourism and natural
resource-based economy, including the development of a plant-based
pharmaceutical industry. That is the reason why tourist always go back
here.
 The host country receives a significant contribution from tourists in
terms of sales, profits, tax revenues, jobs, and increased income in an
area. ... An economic effect analysis of tourism activity usually reflects
on changes in sales, employment, income in a region, occurring from
activity of tourism.
 tourism is closely linked to development, embracing a growing number
of new destinations – hence new jobs. Tourism can create civic pride
by encouraging cultivation and sharing of local customs, food,
traditions and festivals. Personal exchanges between hosts and guests
goes a long way toward fostering better cultural understanding. Tour
operators are focusing on the experiential travel trend, providing more
authentic and immersive experiences for their guests.
4. Philippines has vividly jaundiced rise in the economy. Is there anything that
affects the country to be slowly developing?
 There are concrete reasons why despite the substantial growth, the
Philippines continues to lag behind regional peers in attracting (a
bigger) share in the growing tourism pie. The lack of quality
infrastructure, both hard and soft, is often cited as a major bottleneck to
tourism development. The ease and cost of getting to the Philippines
by foreign visitors, the presence of top international brands and the
creation of tourism destinations that meet visitor expectations are also
decisive factors in the success of Philippine tourism.

5. The above-mentioned crisis are the threats in tourism. How will it be

prevented? Cite some feasible plans or actions.
 A crisis often occurs when it is least expected, so it is important to
have a Risk Management Plan in place that establishes the steps to be
taken in the case of a crisis. The development of the plan should follow
a clear process, to ensure that all tourism stakeholders know what it
involves. During the crisis, Mitigation, Preparedness, Response and
Recovery are considered to be an important four-step process to
successfully manage a crisis.

6. What do you think are some factors that made the tourists to sojourn in our
country?
 People often describe the Philippines as a dot on the map. After all, it’s
not as big as Indonesia or India. But for many reasons, the Philippines
attracts a lot of foreign visitors year after year. Western and Asian
travellers are excited to see what’s the fuss all about and visit major
tourists spots like Boracay, Cebu, or Palawan. As Filipinos, hearing
what foreigners appreciate about our country makes us happy. The
factors that made the tourists sojourn in our country are because of
affordable cost of living, rich in natural wonders like Mount Pinatubo
and Banaue Rice Terraces, best beaches in the world, Filipino food,
and also the Filipino people for being hospitable

 Calamities- Earthquakes and aftershocks
 Security & Safety Issues
 Negative news- Cancellation of bookings, travel advisories

2. Analyze

 Security & Safety Issues- the availability of police military to respond and
preparedness for any crimes or calamities and any peace an order issues.
 Negative news- should avoid false news that will encourage citizens to react
badly against political and cultural issues.
