TASK 1

Read the questions and answers in the text about Deborah Frankel Reese, an
American painter. Match questions 1-5 with answers A-G. There are two answers that
do not match the questions. Write the appropriate LETTER in the column in the
questions box. 0 is an example. (5 x 2 = 10 marks)

The text is an introduction and it is not part of the exercise.

Deborah Frankel Reese’s paintings are done in oils,

but she uses other materials like graphite, ink or tissue
paper for textural and linear emphasis. She lives now
in Vermont. “Moving to the Upper Valley from the New
York metropolitan area 12 years ago gave me a focus
to my work, and helped me to create work that is
mine and not a response to the latest fashions in Soho.

TASK 2

Read the information about Joyce’s Ireland Hiking Tours. Decide if the statements
below are True or False and put a tick (√) in the correct column in the box at the end
of the exercise. The first statement (0) is an example. (8 x 1 = 8 marks)

Ireland has a lot to offer the walker: dramatic sea cliffs, high mountain ridges, quiet green roads …
and then there are the sleeping villages, oak woods, sky-blue lakes and torrential waterfalls.

We organize unique small-group guided hiking tours of Ireland for walkers of all abilities and ages.
We spend from one to three nights in each area and walk the best parts before moving on to our next
stop. We travel between locations on a comfortable LDV mini-coach and are therefore flexible in our
choice of routes.

We stay in small hotels, guest houses, B&Bs and occasionally castles. All rooms are en suite twin,
double or single. Singles are available for a small supplement. We take packed lunches to eat during
our walks, but our evening meals are taken either in the places we are staying or in local restaurants.

If you have travelled with Joyce’s Tours before, you get a 5% deduction. This will be subtracted from
your final payment. We offer price reductions for any bookings of four or more people.

Terms and conditions

1. Joyce’s Ireland tours run with a minimum of four clients: if Joyce’s Ireland has to cancel any
trip, four week’s notice will be given and all money refunded to the client.

2. If you are prevented from proceeding, you may transfer your booking to any other
appropriate person free of charge, provided that you give reasonable notice before the
departure date and that there are no other changes to the booking details.

3. A booking is accepted with payment of a deposit of US$600 / EU€450 / UK£400 per person.
On receipt of this you will receive a letter of confirmation.

4. The final balance is payable eight weeks before departure. If it is not paid by this date, we
reserve the right to cancel the booking.

Run the dishwasher only when it’s full and don’t prerinse dishes. But the real
waste is in the bathroom – take showers, and take shorter ones. Look for low-
flow shower heads. They have great pressure and conserve gallons of water.
