Fire Resistant Cables
“The Last Cable Standing”
CAVICEL
When talking about safety, a particular care must be paid to your interlocutor.
When you then have to choose products that must safeguard systems and human lives, you have
to make sure that your choice is the right one.
The cables, for instance, that quite often cannot be seen, being hidden in walls or below the floor,
but run for kilometres around us, must be chosen by a company you trust.
Cavicel is present onto the market with a wide range of products, including the fire
resistant cables FIRECEL that are installed in over 30 countries.
Buildings, skyscrapers, public buildings, chemical and
petrochemical plants, undergrounds, manifold applications that
have a common denominator: they require a safe use of cables.
When selecting cables that should guarantee specific
performances in case of fire, it is necessary to choose a reliable
company, with a long experience and careful to technology
evolution.
A reliable company, having a long experience that allows to gain the
market trust.
Why CAVICEL
We have a long experience in designing and manufacturing special cables for over 50 years, and
we have always worked closed to our customers to understand the real needs.
Our cables installed in more than 50 countries say that we have the right knowledge and
experience in approaching the market.
We know the problems that a fire could cause to the cables, in terms of both signal interruption and
fume emission that could prevent the evacuation or the rescue.
There are a lot of problems to handle, we know, and this is why we work together with our
customers to deepen all the problems.
The right Partner is important to CAVICEL and this is why we put our experience at customers’
disposal.

Total Quality
Quality means different things to different people.
Quality is not only our approved Quality System
according to ISO 9001 by CSQ – Italy and LPCB – UK.
Quality is not only our full equipped test laboratory to
certified required characteristics of cables.
For CAVICEL Quality simply means to satisfy customers
not only supplying them the required products, but
working together in a professional way to create a long
lasting successfully relationship.
Our growth and success stem from the quality of our
promise and the certainty of delivering on promise.
Quality also means respect for the environment and this
is why Cavicel is now ISO 14001 certified.
Our Value
We are cable manufacturer, but we do not only supply
cables. We grant the satisfaction of the right solution in
cable application. And this means to have fully evaluated
all customers’ requirements, not only in term of cable
performance, but in term of service, knowledge, reliability
in order to assure the best value for the customer. We try
to understand our partner’s situation and criticality. Than
we just create a cable which let’s your value flow free.
This is CAVICEL: Conducting Value.
Cabling
Fire resistant cables generally can be laid-up in
concentric construction and in pairs.
Twisting is important to reduce noise in circuits and
also the lay of twist in some constructions must be
carefully considered.
Screening
Screens are often used in instrumentation cables to prevent or reduce
possible interference in cables that can be caused by the following
reasons:
■■ Cross-talk from adjacent pairs or triples;
■■ Interference induced by external source such as electrical
equipments, machinery, power line.
The most popular screen is:
Aluminium/polyester tape
with a tinned copper drain wire
or earth conductor
Following screens can also been used, when required:
Copper/polyester tape
with a tinned copper drain
wire, for a better screen effect
Bare copper braid
for electromagnetic
interference or when the cable
is subject to movements
6
Construction and General Information
Armouring
Metallic armour are used when cables have to be installed direct buried,
or if mechanical protection is required.
Following points must be considered:
■■ Required tensile load
■■ Expected pressure on cable during service
Standards at a glance
A higher and higher care is paid towards safety in many places and environments in general.
Fire is considered one of the most frequent cause of disasters and human lives loss.
The standards have tried more and more to face this problem under various aspects.
Over the last few years, particularly, both national (BS, DIN, CEI) and international (EN, IEC) standards
have gone through a remarkable evolution.
The evolution, though, is so fast that it is difficult to always have an updated picture.
The purpose of this section is therefore to provide an overview on how the standards have faced
the definition, the choice and the installation of the electric cables concerning the fire risks.
Reference is also made to outdated standards since they are still present in many specifications.
Fire resistance
Fire resistance means that the cable or the installation where the cable is
installed is capable to continue to operate even in case of fire for a
specific period of time (from 30 to 180 minutes).
To be more precise, it is possible to have two different definitions:
■■ Circuit Integrity (or Insulation Integrity) which indicates tests
exclusively referred to cables;
■■ System Circuit Integrity is referred to tests on cables and systems
(ladder, cable tray, clamps).
In some countries, such as Germany or Belgium, the first characteristics
(Circuit Integrity) is often indicated by an abbreviation (FE180 in case the
test lasts 180 min) and the second one (System Circuit Integrity) by the
abbreviations E30, E60, E90 that indicate the cable resistance for 30, 60 and
90 minutes according to a specific test and with different installation systems.

Fire Tests
Cables have to be properly designed, manufactured and also tested.
Many tests are carried out during manufacturing or as final inspections.
Many of them are attended by customers or third part inspectors.
The tests are part of R&D, an extremely strategic activity for a Company
and this is the reason why CAVICEL has invested in this field.
You can find here the main tests concerning the behaviour of cables
under fire conditions, and our main test equipments.
It is important to verify all required performances and give the customers
the full compliance to the requirements.
CAVICEL is proud of its own laboratories and customers are always
welcome to visit them.

We have tried, with this catalogue, to show you our experience, our way of thinking and operat-
ing in the creation of fire resistant cables.
We believe the cables you have seen here are good practical examples. When it comes to your
own cable we can co-design it together: you let us know your specific situation and we will
create your cable all around it. Cavicel can create it for you.
Thank you for calling Cavicel.
