PIPELINE UPRATING
Increasing demand for gas requires increased pipeline capacity. What are the Benefits?
Instead of an expensive new-build project, it is often possible ■■ Independent justification of safe operation to Regulator
to demonstrate a pipeline’s safety at an increased pressure, ■■ Robust documentation suitable for rigorous technical audit
via DNV GL’s uprating methodology. Uprating can achieve ■■ Allows the operator to target resources towards maintaining
increased capacity at a fraction of the capital expenditure or improving integrity through quantified risks.

The required remedial actions were then identified, based on
the results from these assessments.

DNV GL then managed the programme of remedial work,

enabling the uprating to go ahead, on time and to budget.

Feasibility Study

What does it Involve?

The Aberdeen to Wooler 84bar Uprating shows how the
capacity of a pipeline may be increased, even where pipeline
data is incomplete.

DNV GL first of all identified the gaps in the available data, and
considered what assessments and surveys would be required.
In parallel with this, an ‘early-works’ assessment was undertaken

to identify any essential major works required which may impact

on costs and timescales.

Uprating remedial work is determined according to the quantified risks

A targeted package of assessments addressing functionality,
stress analysis and structural reliability was applied to the
pipeline system.
