Curriculum change is one of the crucial phases in curriculum development as it requires
deliberate consideration of various factors that may affect the process. In Lewin’s Force Field
Theory, these factors are referred to as the driving force (supports the change) and the restraining
force (against the change). As future teachers, we can achieve balance between these forces by
acting as a mediator between the administration and the parents and integrating technological
innovations to traditional teaching methods.
Changes in the curriculum will certainly spark a debate between the administration that
strives for change and the parents who are reluctant of the change. A teacher’s role is significant
in acting as a mediator between the two. The teacher may function as the spokesperson of the
government to explain to the parents of what the change is for and how it may benefit the
learners. In return, the teacher may also represent the parents to the administration in raising their
concerns or reasons of resistance to change. This way, the two parties may establish a
compromise acceptable to both.
Moreover, redesigning the curriculum entails the integration of technological
advancements to traditional teaching methods. Although modern teaching models and
approaches should certainly be embraced by teachers, it is also important to have an open view
on conventional teaching approaches and their potential significance in educating learners. The
contemporary teaching methods include the utilization of high-tech devices like laptops, LCD
projectors, and an audio-visual classroom. It also uses methods of discovery learning, which
allows students to learn on their own. On the other hand, the traditional teaching methods
primarily utilize chalk and blackboard where students take down notes of the lessons. A two-way
interaction within the classroom is also emphasized. These varying teaching methods can be
balanced by using the strengths of the other to fill the weaknesses of the other and vice versa.
The greater degree of academic interaction between teachers and student is among the
advantages of the traditional teaching method, which is not highlighted in the approach of
discovery learning of modern approach to teaching. This is important in building a relationship
between teachers and students which is also helpful in the teaching-learning process.
Furthermore, one of the main challenges of the conventional method of teaching, which is its
focus on memorization, can also be addressed by the new teaching approach. The reliance on
mere knowledge repetition and memorization, which it uses to teach children, keeps them from
improving their skills in analytical thought, problem solving, and decision-making (Voice,
2017).
The remodeling of a national curriculum implies a balance between the new and the old.
The role played by teachers to keep the equilibrium between the factors that strive for and resist
to changes is essential. Teachers serve as an agent for creating a learning environment positive to
changes, but also recognizes the importance of accommodating differences.
