even grow up in the Tri-State
Area. A country boy from
Maine, the last place he and
his family ever expected to
live was one of the most
poverty-stricken cities in the
nation: Paterson, NJ.
Yet living by the proverb
"whatever is at your hand, do
it with all your might" Dunfee
founded the Hope 4 All
Community Development
Corporation which truely is
bringing hope to those in
need.
This is not just the story of
how a man rose from medioc-
rity to take on his full poten-
tial...this is the story of how
he is rising up others to do the

Despite its affluent shared
borders with Wayne, Totowa,
and Bergen County, Paterson
is one of the state's leaders
in homelessness. Thousands
yearly are left to the streets
as a result of lay offs, bad for-
tune, and poor life choices.
Unemployment soars past
the post-Financial Crisis
norm and hunger and star-
vation have become press-
ing issues. "I've been to
Africa and I love overseas
missions, but the poverty
you see on TV about these
third world countries is hap-
pening right in our backyard,"
said Pastor Ben. "Something
needs to be done."

ment to these poor freezing
souls for several months. They
were all provided with a
haven from the cold until

Shelter was founded.
Since then hundreds
have come to the shelter to
find a new beginning. Men
at Jericho Road are put
through a [voluntary] 90-day
program where they are
weened off addictions,
taught proper conduct, and
given the tools they need to
succeed. While 25 men stay at
Jericho Road every night, up
to 150 men experience the
program yearly. They are
packed to capacity every night

other organizations trying to
send men in need. This is life
or death. But what makes
Jericho Road so different from
other homeless programs?
The key is getting to know
each man individually.
Everyone has a story.

they are. "We must know
these guys on a personal level
finding out why they are
homeless and then we begin
the process of restoration" says
Pastor Ben. And further than
that, Dunfee and his team
have created an even more
innovative approach to heal-

I
s there a correct age that
would answer this ques-
tion? I believe the answer
is at birth for the parent of a
new born child and if that did-
n’t or doesn’t happen, certain-
ly upon the child’s earning
his/her first paycheck from
his/her first serious job. Let’s
assume the first serious job is
right out of high school or col-
lege, then how much would be
an appropriate contribution
amount and which vehicles
should be used to accomplish
this task? Before going there,
a few more questions if I may.
How many 18 and 22 year olds
are even thinking about their
retirement plan given the fact
that retirement is a concept
they do not understand nor
can visualize in their minds
since the distance between
earning their first paycheck
and their last one are probably
45 years apart? In thinking
about paying the rent or a
mortgage and property tax,
with a car payment, auto
insurance, renter’s or home
owner’s insurance and student
loan payments is there room
in the budget for a retirement
contribution? What about
food expenses, the hefty cell
phone bill, internet and TV
bills, utilities and entertain-
ment expenses? When dis-
cussing the financial future of
young people I frequently
hear, “I have to put away for
my next vacation” and often
hear “Mark, you don’t under-
stand, I have to live today you
know.” How many young
people purchase a car they
can’t afford and obligate
themselves with payments at
the expense of a robust emer-
gency account and or a secure
retirement fund? Did I forget
allocations for clothes, jewelry
and dating? With so many
slices in the pie that most call
their budget and since retire-
ment is such a faraway con-
cept, can’t that wait until next
year or the year after that?

At What Age Should I
Begin To Fund My
Retirement Plan?

“I’m too young to think about
retirement planning, that’s for
older people to worry about” a
25 year old young man once
told me.
Readers, thank you for
your attention to this and all
of my columns you have read;
I can sometimes write or have
an opinion that is controver-
sial which, can either rally
people to my point of view or
push them away with the
opposite effect. However, on
this particular topic of when
to start funding a retirement
plan there should be no
detractors or anyone with an
opposing point of view; the
facts speak too strongly in my
favor. Let’s spend a moment
on inflation: the Federal gov-
ernment decided that 1967
would be the starting point to
look back over the ensuing
years to determine how much
a dollar is worth when com-
paring it to a 1967 dollar and
you know what, the statistics
will astound you. In 43 years a
dollar has depreciated in
value, according to the CPI,
Consumer Price Index, to a
paltry 15¢. This is an 85%
shrinkage. If a young man of
that era starting his working
life at 22 years old, planning
to retire at 65, 43 years in the
future, setting out to replace
his working income based on
his then current annual salary
of let’s say $7,500, he would
need to accumulate $150,000
to succeed. This assumes a
5% withdrawal rate during his
retirement years. But, he
would need to save a full 10%
of his annual salary, $750.00
per year, at an annual rate of
return of 6.23% to accomplish
this goal. If our young man
accomplished this feat
through sacrifice and disci-
pline how should he feel
entering his retirement years
to learn that 85% of his suc-
cess was eroded by inflation.
His $150,000 nest egg would
actually be worth $22,500
when he retires with a result-
ing annual income of

$1,125.00 in 2010 real dollars!
He thought he had a good
plan and started early enough
and put away 10% of his then
annual income religiously
never missing a contribution
nor earning less than 6.23%
per year. Based on these fig-
ures he is poverty stricken and
dependent on Social Security
and others. Why did he fail?
What did he do wrong?
Most of us would agree
that his starting contribution
level was excellent, as was his
commitment and discipline to
continue to invest every year.
The rate of return of over 6%
was also an adequate and safe
assumption given the time
frame. And even though
everything he did was correct,
he came out 85% short at the
end due to inflation.
Assuming the same rate of
inflation over the next 43
years, $1.00 in 1967 that was
worth 15¢ in 2010 would be
worth a measly 2.25¢ in 2053!
So everyone planning to retire
in the future must combat the
same negative forces of the
past in order to be prepared
and fiscally fit.
What is inflation anyway
and what can we do to win
this battle? In simplistic
terms, the cost of goods and
services rises over time, as do
wages and the cost of living;
these are just a few of the
components of the CPI and
how we measure inflation. As
raw materials and fossil fuel
gets consumed, the law of sup-
ply and demand dictates that
prices increase. Unions go on
strike for more money not less
and God makes more people
but no more land and the law
of supply and greater demand
once again mandates that land
prices increase. There is no
leader, government or corpo-
ration that can alter these
rules, yet the Federal Reserve
Bank tries to manipulate them
by injecting or reducing capi-
tal in our economic system by
raising or lowering interest

Increasing Prevalence of Headaches By Dr. Glenn Foss

Research from Finland
shows the incidence of both
general and migraine
headache in children
increased markedly between
1974 and 1992. Using the
same methodology and school
environments in both studies,
researchers found in 1974
about 14% of a large sample
and 6% for migraine.
American researchers,
using national statistics,
reported the prevalence for
migraine in the adult popula-
tion increased about 60%
from 1980 to 1989. The
highest increase was found in
women younger than 45
years. A third study, also from
nearly 100% in men.
Several theories have
been suggested to help
explain these startling statis-
tics. Increased stress in our
lives, both for adults and chil-
dren, is one of the more com-
mon. This theory lacks cred-
ibility, however, as many
authorities agree the factors
that contribute to stress have
not changed significantly
over the past decades. More
likely the dramatic increase in
headache is multifactoral:
diet, fitness level, rest, pollu-
tion and allergy, time spent
sitting at desks, computer
screens and watching televi-
sion and, yes, stress.
Perhaps the single most
important factor may be pos-
ture. Simply put, we slouch
more. Research is now show-
ing posture affects not only
muscle and joint function,
but also function of the nerv-
ous system. We are learning

Intoeing and Outtoeing: Why is my child walking with his

feet turning in/out? By Gena Livingston

W
hen a child begins
to walk his or her
parents expect the
child to utilize good posture
with feet pointed in a straight
or neutral direction. When a
new walker’s feet are pointing
in, (pidgeontoed) or out,
(bowlegged) it may be a
source of concern for family
members. Parents often ask if
the child’s walk is normal.
Will the child grow out of it
and will it cause problems into
adulthood?
Infants learning to walk
typically stand with their legs
in a wide position, their arms
held high and sometimes their
feet turned in or out. Some
parents often describe this
early walking pattern as the
“Frankenstein” walk. This
walk is partially a result of the
child trying to balance as well
as he or she can when learning
a new and difficult skill. In
order to enable the parent to
understand what the infant is
experiencing, I ask them to
recall the first time they went
skiing. They often remember
the stiffness of their bodies,
the wide stance of their legs
and their lack of fluidity as
they awkwardly attempted to
snowplow down the bunny
slope. The parent can then see
the similarities between the
novice skier and walker. With
practice, coordination
improves in both cases. I
advise parents that this is a
normal part of their child’s
development and there is no
need to be concerned at this
time.
During certain develop-
mental tasks in or outtoeing is
normal. At birth the upper
portion of the thigh bone is
rotated inward an average of
40 degrees. By the age of
eight, this inward rotation or
anteversion typically decreas-
es to 10 to15 degrees. It is nor-
mal for the child’s feet to turn
in when he or she begins to
walk. However, after 6-8
months when the child has
built strength, the arches of
the foot have begun to devel-
op and stability and balance
improves; the intoeing should
diminish.
Some children’s inward
rotation does not diminish
and the intoeing posture per-
sists causing various problems.
Intoeing may cause the child
to trip because of difficulty
clearing the foot off the
ground. Intoeing may also
result in a delay of motor mile-
stones like jumping, skipping,
hopping and running. The
child may have difficulty
keeping up with his age level
peers and may also demon-
strate muscular weakness,
hyperflexibility of the hip
muscles that turn the thigh in
and poor trunk strength due
to faulty “W” sitting postures.
If your child demonstrates the
symptoms mentioned a con-
sultation with a pediatric
physical therapist should be
obtained. If intoeing is left
untreated in early childhood,
the adolescent may experi-
ence knee pain or instability
as a result.
There are three typical
causes of intoeing: Metatarsus
adductus (curved foot),
Femoral anteversion (twisted
thigh bone) and Tibial torsion
(twisted shin bone). A child
with femoral anteversion is
easily identifiable. He or she
usually sits in a “W” position
with the knees bent and the
feet flared out behind them.
Their running pattern is usu-
ally characterized by a wind-
mill motion of the legs.
The most common cause
of intoeing in children 1 to 3
years old is internal tibial
rotation. The parents note
that the child appears to be
bowlegged and trips and falls
frequently.
Metatarsus adductus is
the incurving of the foot,
common in newborn chil-
dren. The foot often takes on
the shape similar to a kidney
bean where both the toes and
heel curve in. This deformity
is usually a result of position-
ing in the womb. All three
causes of intoeing can give
rise to functional deficits in
gross motor skill development
and should not be left untreat-
ed.
Outtoeing is caused by
torsional forces that pull the
thigh bone in an outward
direction. Outtoeing if not
addressed, like intoeing is
associated with patella track-
ing problems that cause knee
pain and muscular imbalances
in the adolescent years.
Referral to a pediatric
physical therapist for intoeing
or outtoeing is necessary when
the child is experiencing diffi-
culty with functional age
appropriate activities and if
the child exhibits asymmetries
that are causing pain.
Through therapeutic exercise,
flexibility training, mobiliza-
tions, functional training and
consultation with a pediatric
orthopedist, in and outtoeing
can be treated successfully. In
an aesthetic sense, the child
will be able to walk with a
more straight or neutral foot
posture. The child will be
able to keep up with his peers
when participating in age
appropriate gross motor skills
and finally the child’s
improved biomechanical
alignment will result in a
decreased occurrence of
orthopedic problems into ado-
lescence and adulthood.

a shoulder dislocation. Even
after a shoulder is placed back

term problems. The problem
is that there may be further
internal damage not shown on
x-rays such as a labral tear or a
rotator cuff tear. The labrum
is the lining along the socket
part of the ball and socket in
the shoulder. The rotator cuff
tendon is the structure that
pulls on the ball part and gives
the shoulder strength and
motion.
In some patients, there
may have been tears to both
the labrum and the rotator
cuff tendon. Usually, howev-
er, the pattern is age depend-

with shoulder dislocations;

mal limits of the disc.
Slipped Disc: Discs can’t
actually “slip”. Since they are
strongly attached to the verte-
bra above and below it, they
cannot “slip” out of position.
Since discs are not made
of bone, they cannot be seen
on an X-ray. It is therefore
necessary to have a Magnetic
Resonance Image (MRI) to
determine if you have a disc
bulge or herniation. Because
there are many different types
of disc problems, there are
many different treatment
options. The Chiropractic
approach to treating disc
injuries is to restore the align-
ment of the vertebrae, thus
reducing any abnormal stress
or pressure on the disc. If
there is a bulge or hernia-
tion, Spinal Disc
Decompression Therapy may
be necessary. This technique
allows the bulging or herniat-
ed material of the disc to
restore back to its normal
position.
