Course Description

The goal of the 1 unit A.S.U.C. intern program decal is to facilitate growth in the A.S.U.C. interns. Complementing
work completed by the interns in the A.S.U.C., the program educates interns about how the A.S.U.C. works to
improve student life and provides interns a broader perspective to see how their work affects UC Berkeley at
large. Through hands on activities, lectures, and guest speakers, participants will understand the functionality of
the A.S.U.C. and be exposed to multiple areas of UC Berkeley’s student government along with build essential
leadership skills.

This course is coordinated by the Executive VP’s office. However, the program is open to all A.S.U.C. interns.
Please note that those enrolled must be or become an intern, director, or staff within any part of the A.S.U.C..

Interns are also required to attend weekly meetings outside of class with their A.S.U.C. directors and
departments, and provide weekly progress reports. (Please see Assignment section below for more information.)

Objectives
At the end of this class participants will be able to:

Understand the functionality of each office of the A.S.U.C..

Develop ideas for how the campus infrastructure serving students can be improved.

Plan programs for A.S.U.C. student groups and the general student body.

Explain the key projects and programs of the A.S.U.C., and its operations.

Grasp key campus issues of the day.

Comprehend leadership through “emotional intelligence.”

Assignments
All participants must complete the assignments instructed by the course outline throughout the semester. The
assignments’ purpose is to engage students to think critically about our student government. Assignments are
expected to be at least 250 words (approximately 1 page double spaced). In addition to listed assignments in
the course outline, interns must provide a half page progress report on the projects they have been working on
and nature of their meetings with their directors and departments.

Week 1 Introduction – Meet and Greet

January 25, 2011 Description: Class Introduction and syllabus explanation followed by ice breaker activities
where participants will be able to meet each other and make connections!

Week 2 History of the A.S.U.C.
February 1, 2011 Description: Learn about how the A.S.U.C. came to be and how it works today to improve
student life.

Assignment: Describe your expectations for the A.S.U.C. and how you envision our student
government.

Week 3 Key Issues on Campus & Connections to the A.S.U.C.
February 8, 2011 Description: Learn the key issues on campus and how your work plays into cultivating
improvement of UC Berkeley.

Assignment: Choose one topic discussed today and write at least a paragraph about what
the A.S.U.C. can do (better) to improve or solve it.

March 1, 2011 Description: Learn about how the A.S.U.C. Auxiliary was formed. Learn about the duties of
the Store Operations Board and its connection to the A.S.U.C..

March 15, 2011 Description: Learn about what the Dean of Students Liaisons do and their experience on
campus. Also learn about the Cal Online Student Experience (COSE) project that will be
revolutionizing our campus technology system.

how you would change/improve the projects.

April 5, 2011 Description: Learn about what the A.S.U.C. Constitution entails, and how it drives the

description of what each is and why it is important to you.

Attendance Policy
Attendance is a crucial part of this program.

Unexcused Absences - Students are allowed a maximum of two unexcused absence. If for some reason, you are
unable to attend a lecture because of extenuating circumstances, alert the facilitator as soon as possible to avoid
consequences - more than two unexcused absence results in an automatic No Pass of the course.

Excused Absences - Absences may be excused if coordinators are notified 24 hours before the start of class; these
include medical or family emergencies, or any excruciating circumstances. Two excused absences are equivalent
to an unexcused absence.

Tardies - Three tardies are equivalent to an unexcused absence.

Roll - To ensure accountability, you must sign-in on the roll sheet at the end of every class.

Grading Policy
Attendance is mandatory and will be a major part of your grade – more than 2 unexcused absences will result in
an automatic No Pass. In addition to attendance, your grade will be based on the completion of your
presentations and assignments throughout the semester. You must turn in a typed hard copy of your assignment
(with name, SID, and date) by the start of class.

Grade breakdown is as followed:

Attendance/Participation: 50%
Assignments: 30% (3% each)
Presentation: 20%
