Course Topical Outline

Period 1:
Review of Syllabus: Introduction to counting, snare drum: parts, grip,
assembly and basic stroke. Reading Assignment Cook pgs 1-50.
Multiple bounce versus single stroke. Rudiments: flam, paradiddle, double paradiddle,
flam accent no1 and no. 2. Etude no 1 for snare drum

Period 2:
Roll measurement: Going from a number to the skeletal pattern or from a
given rhythm to the skeletal pattern. Rudiments: 33 stroke roll, 25 stroke roll, 17 stroke
roll, 13 stroke roll, 9 stroke roll, seven stroke roll and five stroke roll. Reading
assignment: Cook pgs 50-82 Non tied versus tied rolls: Rudiments: single stroke roll,
single ruff or drag, double drag, flamacue, ratamacue, double and triple ratamacues,
accents, Etude no 2.

Period 3:
Introduction to Multi-percussion. Reading Assignment in Cook pgs 83-96
Assignment to create a snare and multi-percussion etude. The use of improvisation to
create multi-percussion, recording and notation – Aren’t these National Standards?!!!!!!

Multi percussion etude no 1. Exploring sounds and mallet choices in
multi-percussion; set-up, equipment choices, methodologies. Introduction to Timpani;
ranges, playing areas, tuning, gauges versus no gauges, clef reading. Cook reading
assignment pgs 162-209. Multi-percussion etude no 2.
