1. (a) Explain Independent and dependent source in a detail.


(b) A circuit containing a 25 A independent current source and a 5-V dependent
current source as shown in figure 1c. Calculate V and R.
(c) A voltage given by, υ = 6t volts is connected across a 25Ω resistor. Determine
the energy dissipated by the resistor during the internal 0 ≤ t ≤ 5 sec.[6+6+4]

2. (a) Explain the following terms:-
i. Magnetic circuit
ii. Permeability
iii. Magneto motive force
iv. Reluctance.
(b) A cast steel structure is made of a rod of square section 2.5cm × 2.5cm as
shown in figure 2. What is the current that should be passed in a 500 turn
coil on the left limb, so that a flux of 2.5mwb is made to pass in the right
limb. Assume permeability as 750 and neglect leakage. [8+8]

3. (a) The voltage of a circuit is υ = 200 sin (wt + 30o ) and the current is i = 50
sin(wt + 60o ). Calculate
i. The average power, reactive volt-amperes and amparant power.
ii. Find the circuit elements if w =100π rad /sec.
(b) Find the form factor of the following waveform shown in figure 3

4. (a) The power delivered to a balanced delta connected load by a 400 volt 3-phase
supply is measured by two wattmeter method. If the readings of the two
wattmeter are 2000 and ?1500 watts respectively, calculate the magnitude of
the impedance in each arm of the delta load and its resistive component?
(b) A balanced delta connected load of (2+j3) Ω per phase is connected to a
balanced three-phase 440V supply. The phase current is 10A. Find the
i. total active power
ii. Reactive power and
iii. apparent power in the circuit. [8+8]

5. (a) For the circuit shown in figure 5a, draw the graph and tree.

1. (a) Find the voltage to be applied across AB in order to drive a current of 5A


into the circuit by using star-delta transformation. Refer figure 1a.

3. (a) A 230v, 50Hz voltage is applied to a coil L = 5H and R = 2Ω in series with a
capacitance C. What value must c have in order that the p.d across the coil
shall be 250v.
(b) A sinusoidal 50Hz voltage of 200v supplies the three parallel circuits as shown
in figure 3. Find the current in each circuit and the total current. Draw the
vector diagram. [6+10]

4. (a) On a symmetrical 3-phase system, phase sequence RYB, a capacitive reactance
of 8Ω is across YB and a coil (R+jX) cross RY. Find R and X such that Iy =

connected to a symmetrical 440V, 3-φ supply. The phase sequence is RYB.

1. (a) Distinguish between


i. Independent and dependent sources.
ii. Ideal and practical sources.
(b) Determine the value of R in figure 1b. so that the current supplied by the
battery E1 would be zero.

i. Find the line current, total volt-amperes, active and reactive power
ii. Draw phasor diagram showing phase voltages, line voltages and currents.

maximum?
(c) The combined inductance of two coils connected in series are 0.6H and 0.1H
in series aiding and series opposing connections. If the self inductance of each
coil is 0.2H, find the coefficient of coupling? [4+8+4]
