7.2.1.1 Case Study Discussion – Sustaining Biodiversity: Saving Species and the
Ecosystem Services

What are the three (3) aspects of your lifestyle that might directly or indirectly contribute
to declines in European honeybee populations and the endangerment of other pollinator
species?

1.) Climate change - through the emission of hazardous chemicals of the vehicles
that I ride for transportation greatly disrupt the habitats of bees.
2.) Farmers’ use of pesticide – insecticides are highly toxic to honey bees.
Contact pesticide are usually sprayed on plants and can kill bees when they
crawl over sprayed surfaces of plants or other areas around it and systematic
pesticides on the other hand, are usually incorporated into the soil or onto seed
and move up into the stem, leaves, nectar, and pollen of plants which bees have
contact to.
3.) Excessive demand for honey – Over-harvesting of honey and the lack of
supplemental feeding is the foremost cause for scarcity as bees are not left with
enough honey.

8.2.1.1 Case Study Discussion – Sustaining Biodiversity: Saving Ecosystems and

Ecosystem Services

1. Why do you think Cost Rica (Core Case Study) has set aside a much larger
percentage of its land for biodiversity conservation that the United States has?
 I think it is because if Costa Rica won’t do anything, the massive deforestation of
its land would persist and its effect its rich biodiversity could be adverse and
unmanageable in the years to come. Additionally, as mentioned in the case
study, Costa Rica wants to keep with the biodiversity principle of sustainability.

2. Should the United States reserve more of its land for this purpose? Explain.
 I think yes, knowing that United States is a big continent which has a vast and
rich biodiversity and at the same time, ballooning population, it is a must for them
to conserve much of their lands to compensate to the increasing needs of the
people therein and the increasing emission of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.
Trees and plants would serve a big role in controlling the amount of CO2 in the
environment and lessen the effects of global warming.
