1. (a) Derive the relation between the self, mutual inductances and coefficient of
coupling.
(b) What is the voltage across A and E terminals in the circuit shown in the
figure1b.

2. (a) Define Reactance, suceptance, impedance and admittance.
(b) A constant voltage of frequency, 1 MHz is applied to a lossy inductor (r in
series with L), in series with a variable capacitor, C as shown in the figure2b.
The current
√  drawn is maximum, when C = 400 pF; while current is reduced
to 1 2 of the above value, when C = 450 pF. Find the values of r and L.
Calculate also the quality factor of the coil, and the bandwidth. [4+12]

3. In a 120V compound generator, the resistance of armature shunt and series winding
are 0.06Ω , 25Ω & 0.04Ω respectively. The load current is 100A at 120V find the
induced emf and the armature current when the machine is connected as

(b) short shunt. How will the ampere turns of the series field be changed in

(c) if divertes of 0.1 be connected in parallel with the series field winding? Neglect

4. (a) What is the condition for maximum power in a D.C.MOTOR


(b) A 200V D.C shunt machine had a line current of 40A It armature and field
resistance of 0.22 and 200Ω respectively colwlate power developed in armature
when running
i. Motor
ii. Generator

5. (a) Draw the phasor diagram of a transformer on


i. no-load
ii. full-load
with inductive load and explain
(b) A Single phase transformer has 500 turns in the primary and 1200 turns in
the secondary .The cross-sectional area of the core is 80 sq.cm. If the primary
winding is connected to a 50 hz supply at 500V. Calculate
i. peak flux density
ii. voltage induced in the secondary. [8+8]

6. (a) Explain the constuction of 3-Ω, induction motor with neat sketch.
(b) A 3-Φ induction motor at standstill has a rotor voltage of 100V between the
slip rings .the rotor winding is star connected and has a leakage reactance of
1Ω/phase at standstill and a resistance of 0.2Ω/phase. calculate
i. the rotor current when the slip is 4% and
ii. the slip and rotor current when the rotr develops maximum torque. (as-
sume flux remains constant). [6+10]

7. (a) State clearly what is meant by the synchronous reactance of an alternator.


(b) A 500 V, 50 k VA single phase alternator has an effective resistance of 0.2 Ω.
On short circuit, a field current of 10 A circulates in the armature a current
of 200 amperes. On open circuit the same field current generates an emf of
450 V. Determine
i. the synchronous impedance,
ii. synchronous reactance and
iii. regulation at full load, 0.8 pf lagging. [6+10]

8. A voltmeter is connected across a circuit consisting of a millimeter in series with


an unknown resistor R . If the readings on the instruments are 0.8V and 12 mA
respectively and if the resistance of the millimeter is 6Ω , calculate

(a) the true resistance of R and

1. (a) Explain Faraday’s laws of electromagnetic induction and Lenz’s Law.


(b) Find the equivalent resistance between the terminals ‘a’ & ‘b’ shown in the
figure1b. [6+10]

2. (a) With respect to the series resonant circuit, prove that the bandwidth is in-
versely proportional to the Q-factor at resonance.
(b) The phase delta ? connected three-phase system with an effective voltage of
400V, has a balanced load connected with impedances 3+j4Ω. Calculate the
i. phase currents;
ii. line currents and
iii. power in each phase. [6+10]

3. In a dc-machine the total iron loss is 8kw at its rated speed if the excitation remains
the same, but speed is reduced by 25% , the total iron loss is found to be 5kw.
Calculate the hysterisis and eddy current losses at

(a) full speed


(b) half the rated speed. [16]

4. (a) Deduce the equation for the emf induced in a D.C machine
(b) A 8-pole 220V series motor is wave connected. There are 200 slots and each
slot has 4 conductors the flux per pole is 1.5 × 10−2 Wb. When the motor
is taking 60A. The field resistance is 0.03Ω, and armature resistance is 0.1Ω,
and the iron, frictional loss is 0.1KW. Calculate
i. speed
ii. BHP

5. (a) Derive the emf equation of a 1−Φ transformer and draw the no-load phasor
diagram
(b) A 1−Φ transformer has 360 turns on the primary and 180 turns on the sec-
ondary. The respective resistance are 0.233Ω AND 0.067Ω. Calculate the
equivalent resistance of
i. the primary in terms of secondary windings
ii. the secondary in terms of primary windings and
iii. the total resistance of the transformer in terms of primary. [6+10]

6. (a) State the effects of increasing rotor resistance on starting current, starting
torque, maximum torque and full-load slip of an induction motor?
(b) A 100KW, 3-Φ, 420V, 6-pole,50Hz wound rotor Induction motor, with its
rotor winding short circuited, has a full-load slip of 0.04 and slip at maximum
torque of 0.2 when operating at rated voltage and frequency.Find
i. maximum torque
ii. starting torque. If rotor resistance is doubled by adding external series
resistance. Determine
iii. slip at full-load output
iv. full-load torque
v. slip at maximum torque. [6+10]

7. (a) Derive an expression for Distribution Factor


(b) The following test rest results are obtained from a 3-phase, 6,000-kVA, 6,600
V, star-Connected, 2-pole, 50-Hz turbo-alternator:
With a field current of 125 A, the open-circuit voltage is 8,000 V at the rated
speed; with the same field current and rated speed, the short-circuit current
is 800 A.At the rated full-load, the resistance drop is 3 per cent. Find the
regulation of the alternator on full-load ad at a power factor of 0.8 lagging.

8. (a) Give a summary of four different types of voltmeters commonly used in prac-
tice state whether they can be used for AC or DC circuits. In one case ,give
a sketch showing the construction. With the method of control and damping
employed.
(b) Distinguish between the PMMC & MI instruments. [8+8]

1. (a) Derive the expressions for mutual inductance and coefficient of coupling.
(b) Determine the current I supplied by the battery to the resistive network shown
in the figure1b. [6+10]

(b) The circuit, having two impedances of Z1 =(8+ j 15) Ω and Z2 =(6 − j8) Ω in
parallel, is connected to a single phase ac supply shown in the figure2b and
the current drawn is 10 A. Find each branch current, both in magnitude and
phase, and also the supply voltage. [8+8]

4. (a) Explain the constructional details of D.C machine with help of neat sketch.
(b) A 220v d.c series motor runs at 720 rpm. When taking a current of 25A. The
resistance of the armature is 0.3Ω and that of field is 0.3Ω. If the current

remains constant, calculate the resistance necessary to reduce the speed to
250 rpm. [8+8]

5. Describe the exact and approximate equivalent circuit of a single phase transformer.
Also describe experiments to obtain the parameters of the equivalent circuits.[16]

6. (a) Define slip. Hence deduce the expression for


i. frequency of rotor current.
ii. rotor induced emf under running conditions of 3-Φ induction motor.
(b) A 3- Φ Induction motor is wound for 4 poles and is supplied from 50 Hz
system. Calculate
i. Synchronous speed
ii. the rotor speed when slip is 4%
iii. rotor frequency, when rotor runs at 600rpm. [8+8]

7. (a) Explain OC and SC tests of an alternator. How regulation can be calculated


by the use of their results?
(b) A 60-kVA, 220 V, 50-Hz , I-Φ alternator has effective armature resistance of
0.016 ohm and an armature leakage reactance of 0.07 ohm. Compute the
voltage induced in the armature when the alternator is delivering rated current
at a load power factor of
i. unity
ii. 0.7 lagging and
iii. 0.7 leading. [8+8]

8. (a) Define the following:


i. Absolute Instruments
ii. secondary Instruments.
(b) A PMMC instrument with an internal resistance of 730Ω has a full scale
current of 5mA .It is to be converted into a multi range ammeter for ranges
1A, 5A, 25A and 125A using individual shunts for each range .Calculate the
value of the Individual shunts. [4+12]

1. (a) Derive the relation ship between the self inductances L1 and L2 the mutual
inductances M of two coupled coils.
(b) For the network shown (figure1b), calculate the voltage across the terminals
ac if a 36V battery is connected across the terminals ab. Also calculate the
power dissipated in the 9Ω resistor connected across ab. [6+10]

2. (a) Show that in a series RLC circuit, the resonant frequency is geometric mean
of half power frequencies.
(b) A balanced 3-phase, star connected load of (4+j3) Ω/phase is connected to a
balanced 3-phase 400V supply. The phase current is 12A. Find total active
power, reactive power and total apparent power. [8+8]

3. (a) A 4-pole long shunt lap wound dc generator supplies 25kw at a terminal voltage
of 500V. The armature resistance is 0.03Ω , series field resistance is 0.04Ω and
shunt field resistance is 200Ω . The brush drop may be taken as IV. Determine
the emf generated?
(b) A 4-pole lap wound, long shunt, dc compound generator has useful flux per
pole of 0.07 wb. The armature consists of 220 turns and resistance per turn
is 0.04Ω . Calculate the terminal voltage if the resistance of shunt and series
field are 100Ω & 0.02Ω respectively. When the armature is running at 900
rpm with armature current of 50A. Also calculate power output in kw of the
generator? [16]

7. (a) Write the advantages of stationary armature of stationary Armature and ro-
tating field in an Alternator
(b) From the following test results, determine the voltage regulation of a 2000-V,
I-phase alternator delivering a current of 100 A at
i. unity p.f.
ii. 0.8 leading p.f. and
iii. 0.71 lagging p.f. [6+10]

8. Voltage of 80.0Vis applied to a circuit comprising two resistors of resistance 105


ohms and 55ohms respectively. The voltage across the 55 ohm resistor is to be
measured by a voltmeter of internal resistance 100 ohm / V. Given that the meter
is set to a scale of 0-50V.Determine the voltage indicated. [16]
