What I Need to Know

This module was designed and written with you in mind. It is here to
help you recognize notes and accidentals. The scope of this module
permits it to be used in many different learning situations. The language
used recognizes the diverse vocabulary level of students. The lessons are
arranged to follow the standard sequence of the course.

This module is divided into two lessons, namely:

 Lesson 1 – Understanding Notes in the Treble and Bass Clef

 Lesson 2 – Accidentals

After going through this module, you are expected to:

 identify notes in the treble clef and f clef.

 recognize accidentals.
 read notes with accidentals correctly

After answering the exercises on the previous page, get ready to learn
the symbols that are being used in a music notation.

Music must be written before it can be read and played by musicians.

The system of notation was developed to help the musicians play music as
the composer intended it to be done correctly.

What’s New

The Music Notation

Music Notation is a system of signs by which music is written

down.

Music is most commonly notated using the Staff. The staff

consists of five horizontal lines on which musical notes lie. The lines and
the spaces between the lines represent different pitches. Lower, pitches
are lower on the staff and higher pitches are higher on the staff.

The Staff

A staff is a musical sign made of five parallel lines and four equal
spaces. The lines and spaces are numbered separately from bottom to top.
The staff is a sign where the musical notation is written.

4th line 4th space

The Clef

Assumption – Iloilo
Module in Music and Art
The sign found at the beginning of each staff is known as the clef.
With the blank staff, we cannot yet tell what notes to play. We use Clefs to
tell us which notes correspond to which lines or spaces. The most common
clefs are the Treble Clef (also known as the G clef) and the Bass Clef (or F
Clef).

G Clef or Treble Clef

The G clef curls around the second line which is the G line. This is the main
reason why it is called G or treble clef.

From here we can figure out the other note names simply by going forward
or backward though the musical alphabet: A,B,C,D,E,F,G.

If we need more notes above or below the staff, we add Ledger Lines,
which extend the range of the staff. (Middle C is the first ledger line below
the staff in the Treble Clef).

The Bass Clef

7

The bass clef is also called the “F” clef because the dots are placed above
the and below F, the fourth line.

The note name in Bass Clef are as follows:

The Pitch Names

Different pitches are named by letters. The letters are taken from the
first seven letters of the alphabet – A B C D E F G. The position of each
note on the staff corresponds to a letter name. The pitch names of the lines
in the G clef are E G B D F and F A C E for the spaces.

To remember the line notes on the G clef easily, just remember the
following:

2 Accidentals

Accidentals are symbols in music that alter the pitch of a note. It

Could be a sharp, flat, or a natural sign placed before a note.

What’s New

TYPE OF ACCIDENTALS

Sharp

The sharp sign (#) raises the pitch by a semitone or half step. Study
the illustration below. Notice that the position of the notes did not change
except for the sharp sign placed before the other. However, in playing a
sharp note on the keyboard, each uses a different key to indicate the
difference in pitch.

Flat

The flat sign (b) lowers the pitch of a note by a semitone or half step. Like
the sharp, the flat is also placed before the note. Their positions on the
keyboard tell the difference of their pitches.

Natural

13
Assumption – Iloilo
Module in Music and Art
The natural sign (§) cancels the effect of the previously used sharps or flat.
This restores the note to its original pitch.

But remember, accidentals do not carry over the bar line. They
remain in effect for the whole measure only unless the note is tied to the
next measure. Study the illustration below.

1 – The note is A natural.

2 – The note is A flat.
3 – The note is still A flat even without the sign because accidentals are in
effect for the same note in the same measure.
4 – The note is already an A natural because the bar line cancelled the
effect of the accidentals used in the previous measure.

1 – The note is an A flat and is tied to another A from the second measure.
2 – The note has no accidental sign but is tied to an A flat in the first
measure. Therefore, the note will remain an A flat because of the tie even if
it is carried over the next measure.

Keep in Mind

1. Treble clef is also called G clef, places G above middle C on the second line of
the staff.
2. Bass clef, also called F clef, places F below middle C on the fourth line of the
staff.
3. Accidentals are symbols in music that alter the pitch of a note.
4. Accidentals are always placed before a note and directly on the space or line it
is affecting.
5. Accidentals remain in effect for the whole measure only unless the note is tied
to the next measure.
