2.7 Module Insertion / Removal
The front protection modules plug into receptacles on the AS-7000 backplane. Alignment is
ensured via backplane mounted pins and module mounted guide sockets. The front
protection modules are “hot swappable” and can be installed or removed with power
applied to the AS-7000 rack.

2.7.1 Module Insertion

 Align the module with the upper and lower slot guides in the chassis.
 Gently apply equal pressure to the top and bottom of the module faceplate slowly
pushing the module into the chassis along the upper and lower slot guides.
 Prior to the module being fully seated, increased resistance will be felt as contact
between the module guide sockets and backplane guide pins occurs. The module
latches will also contact the top and bottom of the chassis frame.
 Follow through with gentle pressure until the module fully seats into chassis. The front
panel latches will engage and the module will fully seat into the backplane.
 To secure the module, tighten one screw each at top and bottom of the module
faceplate near the latches.

2.7.2 Module Removal

 Fully loosen one each of the two securing screws located at the top and bottom of the
module faceplate near the latches.
 Gently expand, with equal pressure, the latches at the top and bottom of the module
faceplate until the module disengages from the backplane.
 Gently with equal force grasp the top and bottom of the module faceplate and gently
pull the module along the slot guides until it is removed from the chassis.
 Practice caution regarding the backplane connectors to avoid bumping or damaging
them during removal.

streaming data could degrade all network traffic performance.

AS-7000 Hardware Manual page 16

3.3.1 Configuration and Analysis Ethernet Port
Located on the front panel of the AS-7030SM is an Ethernet port that is used for
configuration and analysis via an external PC or laptop. Using the AS-7080
Configuration Software, an operator can connect to this port and perform the
following actions:

 Read (upload) the current system configuration

 Write (download) a new system configuration
 Monitor data from the system using the table and bar displays

Figure 16 - AS-7080SW Config Tool

Note: To write a configuration, the system must be in the “configuration mode” as described
in the following section.

Using the AS-410 Machinery Analysis Software, an operator can perform the following:
 Real-time time, spectral, and transient analysis
 Gap-free streaming of dynamic data for playback

AS-7000 Hardware Manual page 17

3.3.2 Configuration Lock
To avoid accidental and unauthorized configuration changes, there is a key
lock located on the front panel of the AS-7030SM module. This lock accepts a
key to change the system from a LOCK (normal operating mode) to CONFIG
(configuration mode).

When the AS-7000 system is in the “LOCK” mode, the operator can still run the
AS-7000 Configuration Software to connect, read current configuration, and
view live data. However, while in the “LOCK” mode, if the operator tries to
“write” or download a new configuration to the AS-7000, the following warning message will
appear:

3.3.3 Rack Reset Button

A push button located at the bottom of the AS-7030SM module front panel
allows the operator to issue a global system reset. When pressed, a hard-wired
global reset signal will be broadcast to all modules connected on the
backplane and cause the following actions to be taken:

 Clears the power fault alarms on all AS-7030SM module

 Clears any latched “alert” or “danger” alarms on all AS-7050MP modules

The AS-7050MP analog circuitry includes configurable coupling, analog signal conditioning,
and high speed 24-bit sampling. All sensor inputs are referenced to system common. The
internal system common is typically connected to chassis ground at the power inlet (selector
switch on AS-7035I). In addition, when programmed via the configuration software, any sensor
input signal can be conditioned for speed and phase processing calculations.

5.5.1 Coupling
The AS-7050MP analog circuitry provides several types of programmable coupling. Sensor
type will determine the coupling method. The following table details the coupling available.

Analog Input Programmable Coupling Options

AC The DC bias is removed, only signal dynamics are sampled

DC DC bias and signal dynamics are sampled

An integrated electronic piezoelectric (IEPE) bias current of 3.3mA
IEPE +/- .3mA @ a 24Vdc compliance voltage is connected to the
transducer. The DC bias level is included in the dynamic signal.

5.5.2 24-bit sampling

The analog conditioning circuit performs the required gain and anti-aliasing filtering prior to
sampling. The AS-7050MP utilizes 24-bit high speed analog to digital converters. The Delta-
sigma design uses high speed oversampling and internal digital filtering to acquire data with
both low noise and wide dynamic range. The sample rate of the analog to digital converters
is programmable. By setting the frequency span of the data collection, the sample rate is
then determined as follows: sample rate = 2.56 x frequency span. The following frequency
spans (in Hz) are programmable: 50, 100, 200, 400, 500, 1000, 2000, 4000, 5000, 10000, and
20000.

5.5.3 Speed/Phase Processing

Rotational velocity and phase are determined from the dynamic input signals by comparing
against a voltage level set-point. Depending on the application, the sensor input can be a
single pulse or multiple pulses per revolution.

AS-7000 Hardware Manual page 39

Alta employs a proprietary algorithm to evaluate the incoming pulse stream to determine
rotational speed from 1 RPM to 1,000,000 RPM within .1% accuracy. The speed input circuitry
includes low pass filtering and a programmable hysteresis compensated comparator sampled
at a dual clock rate.

5.5.4 Programmable Hysteresis

Analog conditioning in the form of low pass filtering attenuates frequencies above 15kHz.
Additionally, comparator hysteresis compensation of either .2 Vdc or .5 Vdc can be
programed via the configuration software. Typically, a hysteresis setting of .2 Vdc with a
properly configured set-point is adequate for most applications. If excessive noise is observed
at the speed input, the speed sensor cabling, shielding, and general system grounding should
be reviewed. If required, the hysteresis can be set to .5 Vdc.

9 AS-7055IT
The AS-7055IT card provides the input receptacles for sensors connecting to the AS-7050MP
module. Access to the relay and 4-20mA recorder outputs are available on this card. The AS-
7055IT card is a companion card for each AS-7050MP module and is required to be installed in
the rear of the AS-7000 chassis for each AS-7050MP module installed in the front.

9.1 Chassis Interface
The AS-7055IT card mates to the AS-7000 rack via backplane connectors and guide pins
located on the back of the module. It is secured with two latches and two screws on the front
panel faceplate at the top and bottom. The AS-7055IT card provides connectivity for external
field connections to the AS-7050MP module. It is not “hot swappable”. The AS-7050MP card
should only be installed in slots 3R through 18R.

9.2 Sensor Inputs
Sensor inputs to the AS-7000 system are connected via two terminal plugs on the upper
faceplate of the AS-7055IT card. Each terminal plug lands the field wiring for two separate
sensors allowing up to four dynamic sensor inputs to be connected per card. The dynamic
analog signals from the sensor connections are routed through the card and backplane to
the associated AS-7050MP installed in the front of the chassis.

All dynamic input commons are connected. Do not connect earth grounded
sensors. If using earth grounded sensors, a galvanic isolation circuit should be
employed to break any ground loops that could introduce noise into the
system.

ESD suppressors are designed into the analog input circuitry to protect against static discharge
events. The input circuit is tolerant of input voltages up to +/-30Vdc. Any voltages exceeding
this range could cause permanent damage. Input impedance is greater than 100 kΩ.
