1. Introduction
A network is a collection of computers, servers, mainframes, network devices, or other devices
which are connected to one another which allows the sharing of data. a network can be applied in
many situations and settings, in our case an office setting, whereby a network is used to connect
computers and VoIP devices from different departments and locations to enable communication
with one another.[ CITATION Com20 \l 1033 ] [ CITATION dns19 \l 1033 ]. A network topology is the
arrangement of the elements of a communication network and is used to define the arrangement
of various networks.

Objectives

The main objective of this assignment was to design floor plans for two buildings situated each
in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and Singapore for XEN industries. The Head Quarters of the
company is the building in Kuala Lumpur and their newest branch as a part of the expansion is in
Singapore. Each of the team members chose a particular floor in a block to design and lay out a
topology diagram for a logical network configuration.

Each of floors are designed with ease of access for employees and clients. The bandwidth
between the buildings is a 100 mbps and has secure connections to prevent cyber-attacks or any
sort of eavesdropping. All floors and departments are monitored with CCTV and have multiple
facilities like Wi-Fi and VOIP devices. Both buildings combined include various departments
from –

 Design Department (Kuala Lumpur)

 Manufacture Department (Kuala Lumpur)
 Management (Both Singapore and Kuala Lumpur)
 Finance Department (Kuala Lumpur)
 R&D Department (Singapore)
 Engineering Department (Singapore)
 Ordering and Delivery Department (Both Singapore and Kuala Lumpur)

The floor plan was designed using Microsoft Visio to meet the requirements of the company.
The plan in the figure is the first-floor design of the building in Kuala Lumpur for XEN
industries. The building is also where the core routers of the company is situated. The first-floor
plan includes a walk in Reception desk and Waiting area, from where the elevators or stairs are
accessible to the second floor. From the reception, staff has access to the various departments
situated in the building. The first floor also includes offices of the Management department,
Finance department and Order and Delivery department. While the management department and

6|Page
CT043-3-1-IN

order and delivery department hold 5 employees each, the Finance department has 10 employees.
The server room where the core routers are situated is also located on the first floor of the
building. The building is also equipped with modern features like Wi-Fi and CCTV monitoring.
Multiple access has been provided to the second floor with stairs and elevators for employees
and non-employees. The floor was also designed with the thought of a comfortable workspace
kept in mind for the staff as well as clients. There are primarily one main entrance and two exits
for this building. The entrance is provided via the main door while in cases of emergency
employees can exit from the back. A connector room on the left side of the reception and waiting
area is from where staff can access the server room or other departments in the floor. The
management department is the first room through which staff can pass to the other side into the
hallway which connects the finance department and exterior staircase which leads to the second
floor. The hallway has also access to a dedicated male and female washroom for the employees.
From the hallway there is access to the finance department room and from there further access is
given to the order and delivery department.

CT043-3-1-IN

Floor design by Ahmad Syaqil Farish (TP061972)

The floor plan for the second floor of the Kuala Lumpur building was curated and planned on
Microsoft Visio. The floorplan was designed in line with the company’s requirements and needs.

The floorplan includes a communal staff lounge with a vending machine, a pool table, and a ping
pong table. The second floor also features a specialized room for the chief technology officer
(CTO) and chief executive officer (CEO). In addition to that, the second floor features an office
for the design department and manufacture department. The reasoning behind the proximity of
the design and manufacturing departments is to ensure easier communication between the staff
of the respective departments, as both departments are interdependent on each other. Each
department is provided with 10 PCs and a VOIP device. The floor is also equipped with Wi-Fi
connection and CCTV cameras are placed strategically throughout the second floor to ensure
maximum security and surveillance.

The second floor includes a washroom catered for the employee's welfare and hygiene.
Accessibility wise, the floor is accessible through a staircase situated near the staff lounge,
followed by an elevator for convenience. By situating the staircase and elevator near the staff
lounge invites the patrons of the second floor to a relaxed and positive environment. In addition,
an external stairway is also included, situated nearby the washroom for easier accessibility.

6. Topology and IP Addressing

6.1 Block A – Kuala Lumpur building

Topology

The network designs in the Block A, building situated in Kuala Lumpur uses extended Star
topologies. This type of topology is very commonly used when designing networks for small
scale to large scale companies. In this type of network, the nodes are connected to a switch or a
hub which in turn is connected to a central router for communication and transfer of messages.

It is beneficial for short distance communications which can be used in offices or homes where
Local Area Network is established. The other advantage is that all nodes can be managed from
one central switch. The performance results are also better when using such topologies due to
lack of unnecessary transmissions of messages.

Although Star topologies are often beneficial, it is expensive to set up one due to the extra
hardware required for set up. And in case a switch or a hub fails, all devices connected to it will
lose connection.

6.2 Block B – Singapore building

Topology

The block b building also uses the extended star topology network design since it is commonly
used in most office buildings and homes. Extended star topology is where all the nodes are
connected to a switch which is then connected to the center hub. This image shows how it looks
like. The reason why we use extended star topology is because the chances of network failure are
lower because there is a lot of hardware involve in this topology and not only that it is also easier
to maintain and control the network as it can be managed through the center hub. Extended star
topologies have its advantage, but it also has one disadvantage which is it may be expensive to
set up due to the extra hardware required for set up.
