Chagas Disease
Causative agent: Trypanosoma cruzi
Vector: Triatomine bug (kissing bug)
Mode of Transmission:
• Contaminated food
• Blood transfusion
• Organ transplant
• Kissing bug vector (dominant)
• Mother to child
Symptoms:
• Chagoma- happens at the bite site
• Romaña’s sign- happen around the eyes that can cause eyelid swelling.
Diagnosis:
• Polymerase Chain Reaction
• Immunoassays (differentiate varied Trypanosoma cruzi stains)
Treatment: Anti-parasitic drugs, Nifurtimox and Benznidazole
Prevention & Control: Vector control, Transfusion control and Mother-child transmission
control
