Mr. Calliope arrived from Rome a fortnight
ago. When he learned at our house in Juju
from Sahar Airport, we learned that he
had overpaid the taxi by Rs. 500. Not being
conversant with our currency, he had been
duped. After a week’s visits to various
tourist spots in Mumba, he complained
of other such unpleasant experiences.
He was once taken on a ride through a
city section which covered 10 kms when
short-cut was hardly only 2 kms.
Naturally, there are many other foreign
tourists like my friend who go back home
with an unpleasant impression. This way
we are wounding our valuable guests.
If this tendency is not checked
immediately, our tourists’ traffic will
dwindle considerably.

Although technological progress in the 21st century has enabled people to construct amazing
buildings, it does not mean that in the past that people could raise less impressive structures.
History knows many examples of incredible and unique architectural decision: the Notre Dame
cathedral, the Egyptian pyramids, the Eiffel Tower and many others. Among them, the famous Taj
Mahal should be mentioned without doubt.
The Taj Mahal was constructed (or to be more accurate, ordered to be constructed) by the Indian
ruler Shah Jahan in the 17th century. It is a mausoleum named after Mumtaz Mahal, the beloved lover
of Shah Jahan, from materials including lapis lazuli, jade, crystal, amethyst and so on. The building’s
central dome is slightly more than 70 meters high and is surrounded by four minarets. According
to Islamic tradition, on the walls, there are verses from the Quran written in calligraphy. Inside
the mausoleum, there is a false tomb of Mumtaz Mahal (also called a cenotaph) whereas the real
sarcophagus with her remains lies at the garden level.
The Taj Mahal complex also includes a main gateway, a garden with pools of water, a red sandstone
mosque and an identical building called “jawab”. Shah Jahan wanted to build the second mausoleum
across the river, as grandiose as the Taj Mahal, to have his own remains buried there. He also wanted
the two mausoleums to be connected with bridges. But unfortunately, these plans remain on paper.
Aurangzeb, Shah Jahan’s third son, deposed his father in 1658 and became the ruler of the
country. Shah Jahan ended up under house arrest, locked up in a tower of the Red Fort at Agra.
From there, he could see Taj Mahal. He rested in peace in 1666 and his body was buried next to
Mumtaz Mahal.
Though almost everyone is familiar with the grandiose architecture of the Taj Mahal, not many
know the intriguing history behind it. Though it stands in objective beauty, the Taj Mahal also

Explosion and Fire Indonesia Firecracker Factory

Kills 47, Injures Dozens

An explosion and inferno at a fireworks factory near the Indonesian capital on thrusday killed at
least 47 people, most of them female workers who were apparently locked inside, and injured
dozens.
Witnesses said a huge explosion was heard from the factory at about 10 a.m. smaller blasts
echoed across the neighborhood as orange flames jumped from the building and columns of
black smoke billowed from it. The death toll could rise as many of those who escaped suffered
extensive burns, said Nico Afinta, general crimes director with the Jakarta police. He said bodies
were found piled at the rear of the building.
Police said 103 people were working at the factory and 10 are still unaccounted for. It’s possible
some or all of those 10 had not come to work or suffered only minor injuries and didn’t seek
medical attention, said Jakarta police spokesman Argo Yuwono.
A local resident told Indonesia’s MetroTV he saw police and neighbors smash through a wall of
the factory so trapped workers could escape. Some of the victims were burning as they ran out,
he said.
“The fire began with a strong explosion like a bomb,” Benny, who goes by one name, told the TV
channel.
A worker who escaped the fire said the factory’s staff was mostly women employed on a casual
basis.
Mumum , who also goes by one name, told Indonesia’s TVone she started working at the factory
a few weeks ago and was paid 40,000 rupiah, about $3, a day.
‘I lost so many friends. I couldn’t help. Everybody just ran for safety,” she said, weeping.

 The factory is located next to a residential area in Tangerang, a city in Banten province on the
western outskirts of Jakarta. A police report said the fire spread after an explosion that caused
the roof to collapse.
Video showed flames shooting yards above the structure and billowing clouds of black smoke
spreading across the neighborhood as residents looked on in horror.
Tangerang police chief Hary Kurniawan said 46 people were being treated at three hospitals.
The factory had been operating for less than two months, he said.
“We are still investigating the cause of the fire and questioning witnesses,” Kurniawan told
reporters. “Factory owners or anyone who neglects and violates safety rules should be held
legally responsible.”
Minister of Manpower Hanif Dhakiri said his department would investigate the factory for
allegedly employing under aged workers.
MetroTV, quoting a local official, said although the factory had a permit, its proximity to a
residential area was against regulations.
Safety laws are inconsistently enforced or even completely ignored in Indonesia, a poor and
sprawling archipelago nation where worker rights are often treated as a lower priority than
economic growth and jobs.

Cigarettes should be banned everywhere.
They are very unhealthy for you. It has
been estimated that in the world 5 million
people die because of smoking. There are
many reasons why people smoke. Such as,
to self medicate themselves, because of
peer pressure, people making it look cool
to smoke in front of children and to society
and also because they want to be “cool”,
which affects people of all ages. None
of this would happen if cigarettes were
banned everywhere.
Current trends are showing that by 2030,
8 million people will have died because of
smoking. Each year, about 443,000 people
die from smoking or being exposed to
second – hand smoke. Another 8.6 million
have to live with a serious illness. Not
caring about how bad it is, 46.6 million
adults smoke cigarettes. That’s really
bad. There are more than 4000 chemicals
that are in one cigarette alone. It mostly
contains Nicotine, Carbon Monoxide and
Tar. Smoking kills more people than AIDS
suicide, car accidents, homicide, alcohol
and illegal drugs all together. There are
various illnesses that you can get from
smoking. 90% of patients that come in with
lung cancer show that smoking caused their
illness. Studies show that every 15 minutes
a person dies from lung cancer in Great
Britain. There are so many different effects
of smoking. When you smoke, you also
have a bad look appearance. For example,
you’ll have bad breath, yellow teeth, yellow
fingertips, etc. There are even websites that
tell you how sense-less so many people can
be towards smoking anything.
People do it for reasons that they think are
good. They make themselves believe that
smoking will make all their worries go away.
Well it doesn’t. it makes even more worries
come to mind. Smoking gives you diseases
and makes your life shorter. No one wants
that. Everyone wants to love forever. That’s

On my hubby’s birthday, it was so difficult
to keep my surprise a secret. I was so
worked up myself from the time I decided
on what it’s going to be. The nearer the day
came, the nearer I was to blurting it out.
See he’s not the type who frequents malls
(well of course unless he’s been dragged by
yours truly against his wishes, but then he
gives in 99.9 percent so you know the rest.

 I researched about places to see and go of
course budget would have to be one of the
primary concern and then secondary is the

We started early and went to catch the

if we do it ourselves. Granting that public
transport in Switzerland is easy due to the
well-coordinated timings of the trains and
buses, with just a couple of days to spare, it
will be best to go on a tour for now.
Lucerne is considered the gateway to
central Switzerland. You will find a lot
of attractions in Lucerne like watch and
souvenir shops, Lake Lucerne and great
countryside view along the way. From
Lucerne you can also plan for a trip to Rigi,
Pilatus and Stanserhorn.
After our short but nice trip to Lucerne
we proceeded to Engelberg. The air you
breathe once you reach Engelberg is
simply amazing. You feel as if you are
literally having new set of lungs. I’m not
exaggerating. It is, and if you are looking
for scenery of such unspoilt nature. This is
it. Everything is breath taking. The snow on
the mountain’s scape makes you dreamy
and feel like you are in some far away fairy
land. Too bad we didn’t join the Trip to Titlis
which has an elevation of 3020 meters and
the 150 steps to the Titlis Cliff Walk which is
considered to be Europe’s highest hanging
bridge, but then just looking at the site and
knowing that we weren’t far from these
wonders was enough for us.

Our tour guide Peter is a very well-informed
gentleman and he entertained us with
great information on the places that we
were visiting. He made sure everyone was
on time to prevent delays as well as to
maximize the trip. Before we knew it, we
were back in Zurich just in time for dinner.

Koalas are marsupials, related to kangaroos.
Most marsupials have pouches where the
tiny newborns develop. A koala mother
usually gives birth to one Joey at a time.
A newborn koala is only the size of a jelly
bean. Called a Joey, the baby is blind, naked
and earless. As soon as it’s born, this tiny
creature makes its way from the birth canal
to its mother’s pouch. Using the two well
– developed sense it’s born with – smell

legs and claws and an instinct that tells it
which direction to head, the baby koala
reaches the pouch. There it stays, safely
tucked away, growing and developing for
about seven months.
After a baby has been in the pouch for
about six months, its mother begins to
produce a special substance called pap.
The Joey feeds on this in addition to the
milk it’s already getting. Pap comes from
the mother’s intestines and contains
bacteria that they Joey needs to have in its
own intestines so that it can digest an adult
diet of eucalyptus leaves.
At about seven months, the Joey leaves the
pouch to eat leaves, but returns to it nurse.
By the time the Joey is about one year old.
It stops nursing and eats just leaves.
