Installing DSL filters

DSL filters prevent noise interference between your phones and
your modem.

Important! You must connect a DSL filter to all phones or

telephone devices in your home or office that use the same phone
line as your DSL modem. Telephone devices that may require a
DSL filter include:

• Answering machines
• Fax machines
• Security systems
• Digital TV units
• DSS and satellite units

Do the following for all phones or telephone devices in your home or

office that use the same phone line as the DSL modem (including
the telephone that will be used with the modem).

Note You do not need to attach a DSL filter to unused wall

sockets.

1 Disconnect the phone or telephone device from the wall socket.

2 Connect the ‘tail’ of the DSL filter into the wall socket.

Troubleshooting
Troubleshooting and
support

In these pages, you can troubleshoot many problems that you may
encounter while setting up or using your DSL service. Before you
contact BT Openworld for support, try using this chapter to quickly
resolve potential issues.
Here is a list of the most common problems:

■ My modem isn't detected when I plug it in

■ My modem does not connect
■ My telephone conversations are noisy

My modem isn't detected when I plug it in

In order to begin to use your modem, your computer must detect
that you have plugged in the modem. If the LED on the modem does
not show a light, then the modem isn't detected and you will not be
able to finish setting up the modem. Here are some common
reasons why your modem was not detected:

• The modem software wasn’t installed properly

• The modem wasn't installed properly.
• The USB cable isn't securely connected to the USB port on your
computer.
• The USB controller(s) in your system have been disabled.

19
Troubleshooting and support

My modem does not connect

There are three symptoms associated with a modem that doesn’t
connect:

• The modem won't train.

• The modem trains, but won't log on or pass traffic.
• The modem trains, but drops the connection.

What is “training?”
When you dial a conventional analog modem, you generally hear
a lot of noise as the connection is being established. DSL
modems, similar to your analog modem, will negotiate (without the
noise) with the phone company equipment to establish a set of
rules by which both will communicate. This is called training.
Factors such as speeds and rates are established during training.
Training needs to happen anytime you lose connection with the
telephone company's equipment, such as when you power off the
machine and restart.
Training is a separate process from logging into the ISP; however,
they are often viewed as the same as they happen consecutively.
You might be able to train, without being able to log onto your ISP.
You will never be able to log onto the ISP without first being
trained.

How do I know if my modem is trained?

• The light on the modem shows green.

• On the ADSL Setup window, the Operational State displays
Data. For more information on checking the status of your DSL
connection, see Checking your Internet connection on page 15.

20
Troubleshooting and support

The modem won't train

Each time you initiate a DSL connection, your DSL modem "trains"
with the DSL service. Here are some common reasons why your
modem won’t train.

• DSL service has not been activated: In some cases, you may
receive your AnyPoint® DSL Modem 3240 and installation
software before BT Openworld has finished setting up your
account. Refer to the service installation date that was provided
by your telephone company and verify that the date has passed.
If it is after the date on which your service is supposed to be
activated, contact your telephone company for assistance.
• The modem cable isn't correctly attached: The cable that
connects your modem to the wall outlet or the cable that
connects your modem to the USB port on your computer is not
attached. Be sure to attach the modem cable correctly.
• The driver isn’t loaded: If the driver did not load for the
modem, you will not be able to connect. Check the ADSL Setup
dialog box to verify that the modem was installed and is
functioning correctly. See Checking your Internet connection on
page 15. You can also check the external indicator light on your
modem that shows the state of your modem. See Reading the
modem LED on page 23.
• DSL filter was installed incorrectly: If your DSL filter was
installed incorrectly then you will not be able to connect. To
correctly install your DSL filters, see Installing DSL filters on
page 4.
• You have a incompatible telephone: Sometimes a type of
telephone can cause problems when used on the same phone
line as your DSL service. If you suspect you have such a phone,
you can disconnect each phone in your home, one by one, until
you isolate the incompatible phone. Remove or replace this
telephone.

21
Troubleshooting and support

The modem trains, but won't log on or pass traffic

Sometimes your modem will train successfully, but you won't be
able to log on to BT Openworld or pass traffic on the Internet. Here
are some possible reasons:

• You used an incorrect user name or password: You will be

asked to type a user name and password when you log on. Both
must be correct in order for you to be authenticated to
BTopenworld.
Verify your user name and password when you type them in the
Network dialog box. Remember that most user names and
passwords are case-sensitive; make sure that you are using
upper-case and lower-case letters correctly. If you are sure
whether you have entered your user name and password
correctly or if you can't remember them, contact BTopenworld to
verify your user name and password.
• Your TCP/IP information is incorrect: When you configure
your Network, before installing the modem, you must enter the
correct TCP/IP information. For instructions on entering your
TCP/IP settings, see Configuring your network settings on page
9.

The modem trains, but drops the connection

Sometimes you will be able to train and use the Internet, but then
your connection is dropped. Here are some common problems and
how to solve them:

• The connection drops when a phone is picked up: Someone

in your house picks up a telephone and your DSL connection
drops. This is caused by DSL filters that are not installed
correctly or not installed at all. For instructions on installing DSL
filters, see Installing DSL filters on page 4.
Make sure that a DSL filter is installed on each phone, fax
machine, answering machine, and any other device that uses
the same phone line as your DSL. Contact your telephone
company or DSL service provider if you need more DSL filters.

22
Troubleshooting and support

• You have an incompatible telephone in your home:

Sometimes certain types of telephones can cause problems
when they are used on the same phone line as your DSL
service. If you suspect you have such a phone, you can
disconnect each phone in your home, one by one, until you
isolate the incompatible phone. Remove or replace this phone.

My telephone conversations are noisy

Sometimes, you may hear "line noise" when you use your
telephones on the same line as your DSL. Two possible reasons
may be that DSL filters are not installed properly or on all
telephones, or you have an incompatible telephone. For instructions
on installing DSL filters, see Installing DSL filters on page 4.

DSL filters are not installed properly or on all telephones

DSL filters need to be installed on each telephone in your home or
office. Be sure to include DSL filters on all the devices in your home
that use the phone line. These devices include:

• Telephones
• Fax machines
• Answering machines
• Digital TV units
• DSS and satellite units
• Security systems

Note You are limited to five DSL filters per phone line. Any
additional DSL filters installed over this limit may cause a condition
known as "signal attenuation" that could cause your telephones
and additional devices to not work properly.

Reading the modem LED

The external indicator light on the front of the modem shows the
state of the modem. It can show these states:
• Red. Software loading.

23
Troubleshooting and support

• Amber. Starting up.

• Green. The modem is ready.
During setup and while your modem is training and connecting to
BT Openworld, it is not uncommon for the modem to go from state
to state, not necessarily in the order described above.

Support information
If you have trouble connecting to BT Openworld, check that every
installation step has been completed.
