Accumulator air checking locations are being shown through the pipes,
which are accumulator opposition oils. The square ports over the accu-
mulators are actual accumulator oils. When air checking, what air comes
out the square ports will indicate accumulator piston leaks.

Filter Information

1986—early 1988 AXOD used two rubber o-rings on the


filter neck. These are to be replaced with the narrow orange
seal type. SHO models may have used both green and or-
ange seals.

Depth of filter ridge is .610” on the AX4N & 4F50N.


AX4N & 4F50N uses a deep hole all cases.
Early AXOD cases had a recess less than .610” and used a
filter with a .270” wide orange seal.

AXOD, AXODE and AX4S filters use orange rubber seals.


AX4N and 4F50N use green rubber seals.
The filters are the same just the rubber seals are different.

Brackets come with certain styles of fil-
ters to hold pipes in that the early style
filter use to retain. The early style long
filters are no longer available. The
bracket must be used with replacing a
early long style filter with the late style
filters as shown. The lube pipe will pop
out if this is not done.

Complaints
Complaint: No reverse or slips in reverse.
Cause: Mismatch of chain cover and case or using wrong chain cover gasket.
Solution: See pages 5, 6 & 34 for types of mismatches.

Complaint: No forward and no reverse.


Cause: Input (Low sprag ) installed backwards or is not holding or wrong type
of forward clutches are being used. See page 13 & 14 for more info.
Solution: Check sprag - see page 13.

Complaint: No 3rd gear.


Cause: Spacer ring left off of 3rd clutch piston. 1998 up Windstar with stan-
dard type piston - they use a taller piston.
Solution: New pistons do not come with spacer ring they must be remove off
the old piston and installed onto the new piston - see page 15.

Complaint: Rough 1-2 shift.


Cause: Mismatch of Line Mod Valve assembly with type of controller.
Solution: Use correct accumulator system see page 36 for details. Also see the
AX4N book for types of VB's and valves that will not work .

Complaint: Slips in 1st and 3rd


Cause: Inner horse shoe clip missing from 1-2 servo assembly.
Solution: Reinstall horseshoe clip.

Complaint: Rough 1-2 & 2-3 shifts


Cause: Bad input speed sensor. Code # P0715, P0716 or P0717 insufficient
input from input speed sensor.
Solution: Change Input Speed Sensor.

Complaint: 1-2 bind or bang at light and med throttle.


Cause: Speed sensor malfunction. Movie on scanner showed speed sensor
bounce. Shifting went 1-3 and then 1-2 on scanner. Complaint may feel like
spin-bang or may feel like early shifting.
Solution: Change Speed Sensor.

Complaints
Complaint: Trans locks down in Reverse
Cause: Pipes crossed in bottom pan.
Solution: See page 4 for correct pipe installation.

Complaint: Radio turns itself off when the shifter is moved from "N" to "Park"
Cause: Neutral switch.
Solution: Replace neutral switch.

Complaint: No forward and no reverse.


Cause: Stripped torque converter splines - common on 2003 and later models.
Disconnect cooler line and if oil is pumping converter is probably stripped. A
pressure gauge can also be used to verify pressure.
Solution: Replace as necessary.
