Design and Function

Radio
There are four versions of the radio. All except one can control a CD changer and are
able too communicate with other systems via the SAE J1939-3 control data link. Refer
to the operator’s manual for more information about the functions of the radio.

The radio, the telephone and the steering wheel buttons are connected to the instru-
ment cluster by the J1939 control data link. This is a ”data network” (SAE J1939-3), in
which the communication with other systems occurs via the instrument panel. The ra-
dio only transmits display information to the instrument cluster (station information for
example). Other systems transmit information which the radio uses for other functions.
This information ”is channelled” through the instrument cluster.

If the supply voltage to the radio has been interrupted the radio checks that it is installed
in the correct vehicle by comparing the VIN. If the VIN does not match the user is re-
quired to enter the Anti-theft code. If the wrong code is entered 3 times in a row, the
radio must have battery and ignition power on, uninterrupted, for 1 hour before 3 new
attempts are possible (also note: no radio buttons can be pressed during this 1 hour.)

Special functions
The radio has a number of functions where the radio co- Function Connection
operates with other systems via SAE J1939–3. The most
basic radio (AUD-BAS) has only a few functions and Background lighting A6
does not communicate on the J1939-3.
Background lighting, parking lamps A3
• Displaying information in the instrument display. (Not Muting during telephone conversa-

tions (MUTE)
• Control via steering wheel buttons. (Not AUD-BAS) Speed dependent volume A1
• Speed– and engine speed-dependent volume. (Not Engine speed dependent volume -
AUD-BAS)

• Control of the backlighting using the rheostat for the

dash lighting.
