EXPECTED OUTCOMES/OUTPUTS: The students will be able to independently create a short research paper
using the different internet tools.

I. INTRODUCTION AND FOCUSED QUESTIONS

In this module, you will be able to feel safe and secure when using the internet. You would be
fascinated of how many rules one should apply before actually using the internet. Nowadays, internet can be
referred as a weapon not only to defend ourselves from pain or hatred but also to hurt others even if we
don’t intend it. By knowing the simple and few rules and ethics to be followed, we can all have an access to a
safe zone through the internet.

ONLINE SAFETY AND SECURITY, ETHICS AND NETIQUETTE
The World Wide Web gave a lot of important benefits for the users to enjoy but because
of its massive breakthroughs in the field of information, sharing and communication, it did not
only become a helpful tool for people around the world to connect with each other but it also
carried drawbacks wherein the issue of safety, security and ethics of the users are
compromised. The following are the common issues and crimes on the internet: a.
cyberbullying; b. hacking; c. identity theft; d. plagiarism and; e. intellectual property rights and
copyright issues.
The latter issues caused the developing of the rules and regulations to be followed when
using the internet. Since the internet, especially the social media, allows you to post anything
and everything every day, some personal information might be given to or seen by unknown
people. Online safety and security define how you are going to keep yourself safe while surfing
the web.
The Core Rules of Netiquette
(Netiquette is a combination of the words “net” from the internet and “etiquette”)
Rule 1: Remember the human.
Rule 2: Adhere to the same standards of behavior online that you follow in real life
Rule 3: Know where you are in cyberspace

ACTIVITY 1. As grown-ups you should be able to know what is right from wrong and you
should be able to inspire and teach the younger kids on how to use the internet properly.
With the use of your Facebook account, post a photo, poster, drawing, slogan, logo or status
that will help promote the ethical use of the internet. Be creative and make sure to tag my

ONLINE SEARCH AND RESEARCH SKILLS

Communicating with others isn’t the only thing you can do over the internet. The
internet is mostly known for its advances when it comes to information. The internet is really
amazing at its job! It is a like a maze of connected data and information. You can make the best
out of it if you apply advanced techniques in information gathering but take note that every
technique is different to other search engines.
Most of the following techniques is best suited with Google search engine:
1. Choose your web browser based on the best search engine for you. (Ex. Google Chrome
for Google)
2. Use punctuation mark and Boolean operators (AND, OR, NOT)
3. Filter results by setting the range of time it was searched.
4. Use truncations such as *, !, ?, and $. (Truncation is a searching technique used in
databases in which a word ending is replaced by a symbol. For example: If
the truncation symbol is *, then the truncated word, laugh*, will search for results
containing laugh, laughter, laughing etc.)
5. Limit your search to specifics.
6. Use quotation marks form specific phrases.
7. Use the Advanced Search button to refine the search. (Do an Advanced Search on your
Mobile. Go to the Advanced Search page. Advanced Search for websites. Advanced
Search for images. In the "Find pages with" section, enter your search terms. In the
"Then narrow your results by" section, choose the filters you want to use. You can use
one or more filters. Click Advanced Search.)
8. Use Browser history.
9. Read and spell-check.

IMPROVING YOUR RESEARCH SKILLS ONLINE.

1. Know your sources. Make sure to find the most reliable information which can be found
in multiple sources or, better, to have the original source.
2. Use your web browser properly. Know the capabilities of your preferred browser to
help make your search faster and easier.
3. Organize your bookmarks. Use your browser’s bookmark manager to organize the links
you have marked. If possible, create folders and subfolders.
4. Learn to use advanced search techniques. Practice using advanced search techniques
which are readily available in Google for instance.
5. Follow the web. Follow the wave of information in the web. Just make sure to read and
be critical in every link or page you click.

ACTIVITY 2. Using MS Word, construct a 1-2 pages research paper. You can
choose any topic you want to do a research on. Make sure to get your
information true and correct. Organize it properly and submit it to my
