American English Sounds - I

'--~~~--------
English is not spelled phonetically. The same sound is spelled several different
ways. For this reason it is helpful to assign separate symbols to each sound. The
following is t h e International Phonetic Alphabet !lPA) system. Twenty-four (24)
consonant symbols, eleven (11) vowel symbols, and five (5) symbols reprebenting
diphthongs are used to represent the significant sounds of American English.
These charts are only aids and not to be memorized. However, the student. must
be awar e of the different sounds represented in these charts. They must be able
to r ecognize and repeat them accurately.
