MODULE TITLE Bed Make-up and Replenishments of Linens

NOMINAL DURATION: 7 HRS

SPECIFIC LEARNING OBJECTIVES:


At the end of this module you MUST be able to:
1) demonstrate the process of making up a bed, make up of checkout
rooms and executing a turn down or night service;
2) differentiate make-up from check-out room;
3) understand the importance of labeling and turning of mattress: and
2) illustrate replenishment and maintenance of linens.

Bed Make-up and Replenishments of Linens

After reading this INFORMATION SHEET, YOU MUST be able to:


1) demonstrate the process of making up a bed, make up of check
out rooms and executing a turn down or night service; and
2) illustrate replenishment and maintenance of linens.

Check-out Room Procedure

1. Check for items left by the guests


2. Pull the curtains or blinds
3. Adjust the air-con to desired temperature
4. Remove soiled dishes used during room service
5. Empty all ashtrays and wastebaskets
6. Wash and wipe dry drinking glasses
7. Clean thermos jug then refill with cold water
8. Strip the bed of soiled linen and pillowcases and replace them
9. Make up the bed
10. Vacuum or shampoo the carpet and upholstered furniture
11. Dust all furniture
12. Polish mirror and all other metaled fixtures.
13. Replenish all room supplies
14. Make up the bathroom
15. Fix the curtains
16. Check the overall condition of the room, including installed fixtures and
appliances
17. Close the door

Turndown service
– this is a service normally carried out around 6.00 pm when a chambermaid or
evening maid enters an occupied room and:

Amenities include items such as:


● Closes curtains or drapes
● Dims lights
● Folds down bed top sheet
● Replenishes towels, toiletries, and stationary
● Places room service breakfast menu on guests' pillow
● Places complimentary mint or chocolate on the pillow or bottled water at the
bedside
● Places disposable slippers beside the bed
● Empties rubbish bins

REPLENISHMENT AND MAINTENANCE OF BED LINEN


Replenishment of Linen
1. All soiled linen items should be replaced with fresh ones.
- Bed sheets, pillowcases should be replaced daily.

- Towels, hand towels, washcloth, and bathmat should be replaced daily
if they are used by the guest.
- Blankets and bed covers should immediately replace once they are
soiled.
- All linen items used by sick guests should be replaced daily whether
soiled or not and should be segregated from the rest of the linen items.
2. Curtains should be replaced once soiled.
3. Request for additional linen items like pillows, blankets, etc. will be
granted depending on the availability of the item. Once delivered, it should
be immediately logged down by the supervisor or room boy.
4. All linen items should be properly folded and installed in the right
container or location.
5. Shower curtains (if made of plastic) may not be replaced but should be
washed and cleaned daily during room make-up. If other curtain material
is used, wash and dry it at least once a week.
6. New occupants shall be provided with new set of linen even if the ones
used by former occupant are still clean looking.
7. The number and quality of linen to be used shall depend on the price of
the room. Deluxe and suite rooms require linen of higher quality.

Labeling and Turning of Mattress


As part of the preventive program of Housekeeping, mattresses are
examined periodically to determine their age, condition and durability. Likewise,
they are turned at least four times a year to prolong their life.

Procedure: Each mattress is marked with the purchase month and year before
its installation in a guest room.

Bed Make-up Sequence

*** BODY MECHANICS – is the proper bending and fitting procedure


during make-up.
1. Bed pad – cloth-like pad for bed to protect mattress from
stain
2. 1st flat sheet – right side up – mitered four corners
MITER- noun.
-In sewing, a diagonal join between the edges of two hems at
a corner of a piece of fabric.
-refer to the process of inserting the linens on bed
considering a well-folded corner.
3. 2nd flat sheet – wrong side up.
4. Blanket / wool – right side up – placed six (6”) away from the
headboard
