Justice Dept. drops defense of DOMA

Historic decision triggers calls for repeal
of federal ban on same-sex marriage
By CHRIS JOHNSON

The Justice Department, in a historic announcement this week,

said it would no longer defend the controversial Defense of Marriage
Act in court.
“After careful consideration, including a review of my recommenda-
tion, the President has concluded that given a number of factors, in-
cluding a documented history of discrimination, classifications based
on sexual orientation should be subject to a more heightened stan-
dard of scrutiny,” Attorney General Eric Holder said in a statement.
“The President has also concluded that Section 3 of DOMA, as ap-
plied to legally married same-sex couples, fails to meet that standard
and is therefore unconstitutional. Given that conclusion, the President
has instructed the Department not to defend the statute in such cases.
I fully concur with the President’s determination.”
LGBT rights groups quickly praised the decision.
“The administration today acknowledges that there is no legitimate
reason for this discrimination and therefore it cannot be defended
under the Constitution,” said Evan Wolfson, president of Freedom to
Marry. “This a momentous step forward toward Freedom to Marry’s
goal of ending federal marriage discrimination and fully protecting all Washington Blade file photo by Michael Key

Md. Senate advances

Colo. senator introduces civil unions bill
DENVER — A Colorado state senator introduced a civil unions bill on Feb. 14. “Civil
unions will allow committed couples to share in the responsibilities and protections in
Colorado law that most families take for granted,” Sen. Pat Steadman said in a press
release. He said he considered the less-than-equal argument many gays make against
civil unions but said everyday matters like medical care and inheritance are too vital to

It may sound preposterous, but it’s true. Josh Sticklin, 25, makes his bid for a
future career of real acting renown by his role — really, 13 of them — in a one-man

The lithe and limber Stickin is a 2008 graduate from American University with a

phing from one character to another, sometimes juggling four of them at the same
time, and careening about the stage in leaps and twists and turns, hurling himself
into this play with fierce intensity and raucous humor.
