Introduction
This manual presents information about the procedures required to set up and run workshops for job seekers who
have registered with JCL Talent to find employment. Three principal topics relate to the organization and running of
job seeker workshops. You need to identify the appropriate personnel, advertise the workshop, and arrange the
physical space.
Refer to the Summary to view a chart that shows the breakdown of revenue by region earned from job seeker
workshops. Managers should refer to this chart to identify the most popular workshops to offer.
Personnel
A successful job seeker workshop draws on personnel from three areas: branch management, workshop leaders, and
branch staff. The responsibilities associated with each of these areas are described below.
Branch Management
As the branch manager, you make it all happen! Your principal duties are to work with the workshop leader to select
appropriate topics to feature in a job seeker workshop, to set up the workshop committee, determine a date and
time for the workshop, and manage the workshop. Following is a description of each of these duties.
Workshop Theme
Your first and most important duty is selecting a theme for each of the workshops you plan to offer. The most
successful workshops are those that focus on topics relevant to job seekers. Examples include Resume Writing, Self-
Assessment, Interview Preparation and Practice, and Networking Skills. The criteria you apply to select the topics you
plan to feature in each job seeker workshop depends on your own preferences and on your consultation with the
workshop leader.
Workshop Committee
Some managers set up a workshop committee that includes JCL Talent staff, workshop leaders, consultants, local
educators, HR professionals, and successful job seekers. The committee reviews and recommends workshop topics.
Date and Time Selection
As the branch manager, you select an appropriate date and time for the job seeker workshop. Most workshops are
held on a weekday evening from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. For most branches, this time period attracts the greatest number
of job seekers. Another successful time period for some branches has been 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on a Saturday afternoon.
Branch Staff
Depending upon the popularity of the volunteer experiences and locations featured, the job seeker workshop may
require from one to ten staff members to be on hand to assist with registration, distribute refreshments, and make
appointments for further counseling.
Workshop Leaders
Every JCL Talent job seeker workshop needs an experienced workshop leader. This leader can be hired on a contract
basis or one of the consultants interested in training may choose to lead a workshop. Always choose workshop
leaders who have a proven record as dynamic and engaging presenters.
Online Venues
Local radio and television stations may provide your JCL Talent branch with relatively inexpensive air time to
advertise a job seeker workshop. Your media representative can also contact local community programs to obtain
free advertising in the form of an interview with one of your consultants, an employer, or a successful job seeker.
Local newspapers and websites may also be interested in carrying a feature article on specific workshops.
Website
Your area of the JCL Talent website should advertise your job seeker workshops and include links to interviews with
consultants, employers, and successful job seekers. You can also include links to an online shopping cart that enables
customers to register for a workshop directly from the website.
Social Media
Ensure that your job seeker workshop is posted on various social media websites, particularly Facebook, Twitter, and
LinkedIn. Explore options for other social media sites. Make sure that people who attend a job seeker workshop can
rate it through the various user review websites.
Printed Materials
Printed materials include those used for mail-outs, counter items, and posters.
Mail-outs
Prepare a special mail–out to people who have already participated in a JCL Talent workshop, such as one of our
networking workshops or an employment skills workshop. Include a brochure describing the job seeker workshop
with a quarterly or seasonal mail–out. Simple six-panel brochures can include profiles of consultants, job postings,
and information about the topics covered in job seeker workshops.
Posters
Your JCL Talent branch can distribute posters throughout your target area. Good venues for posters include
community centers, colleges and universities, coffee shops, and libraries.
Workshop Organization
Workshop organization relates to three principal activities: setting up the workshop, making appointments, and
providing refreshments.
Workshop Setup
Most JCL Talent branches book space in a meeting room at a local hotel for a job seeker workshop or use the
branch’s boardroom if it is large enough. The venue should have sufficient seating for a maximum group of
approximately 50 people. Here are suggested setup options.
Workshop Delivery
The job seeker workshop should include a PowerPoint presentation that requires a professional quality projection
and sound system, a lectern or podium for the presenter, and a good supply of JCL Talent brochures. Additional
seating may be required if the job seeker workshop features multiple speakers such as consultants, job seekers, and
employers.
Workshop Schedule
Most job seeker workshops last for three hours with one short break. The workshop may also be combined with a job
seeker networking event, particularly if representatives from companies interested in hiring staff are present.
Bookings
During the intermission and following the job seeker workshop, audience members may wish to book an
appointment with a JCL Talent consultant. Ensure that sufficient staff is on hand to meet individually each job seeker
who wishes to make an appointment. Staff should be equipped with laptops so they can confirm availability and
enter appointments on the spot.
Over Booking
If a workshop becomes fully booked, branch managers should be prepared to offer additional workshops. Prior to the
job seeker workshop, be prepared by selecting additional times and confirming workshop leader availability. Many
JCL Talent branches have reported phenomenal success with job seeker workshops and been “caught out” when
workshops filled up much more quickly than anticipated and alternate or additional workshops were not available.
Refreshments
Your JCL Talent branch can choose to offer job seekers hot and cold beverages and a selection of cookies or baked
goods. Your decision on whether to offer refreshments will depend upon the size of the crowd you expect.
